Ecobee issues

I bought the ecobee 3 lite back in february and it has been working as a thermostat should. It is mounted on an interior wall in the living room on the opposite side from the registers so no cold air is blowing on it. Once it started getting hot outside, I kicked the ceiling fan on and it actually lowers the thermostat reading causing the ac to not turn on and the rest of the house heating up. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

normally i'd say that's normal for centrally located thermostats, but one of the selling points is the remote sensor... would enabling those help any?

I actually did pick up a pair of sensors about a week ago, but they've been reading temps erratically so I'm having to get ahold of ecobee customer support for that issue.
edit to add that they told me I need to use plumbers putty to seal the hole in the wall where the wires are from the thermostat.

i ended up turning off the main sensor in the ecobee and only using remotes since the hallway location wasn't a good location for determining the temp in the main areas. It was throwing my averages off

Tech support had me remove the batteries and "reset" the sensors since they would jump up 4-5 degrees for no reason. We'll see if that helps

I had a similar issue with honeywell thermostats, except with humidity. It was very high due to being mounted on a wall open to the attic where the installers punched a big ass hole. I could never get it sealed quite right, but on my thermostats, I can actually go into installer settings and make it read ONLY it's remote thermostat, which is mounted in a part of the room that is better for temperature readings anyway.

Can you do that? IF so, that would be perfect.

+1

Our builder put our thermostats in terrible locations and we didn't relocate them when we installed our Ecobees. We just use the remote sensors and disabled the main sensor in the thermostat.

I think we also disabled the "Follow Me" feature as well.

Thanks for the tips/experiences. Talked to our ac guy and he said the main thermostat was in a bad spot anyways, so I just put one sensor where he said to and another in a bedroom. Disabled the main thermostat and it's a lot better

Been running an Ecobee 3 lite for about 2-years. My comments as follows.

It saves me money. The computer controls the hvac better than I do. There software makes slight adjustments. Basically it keeping you at a constant comfortable temp in the most efficient way possible. It's an auto pilot for your hvac. You don't have to mess with it.

Its got an app where you can connect to the device and look at all the runtime data. The app shows all the graphs of everything its doing. It shows all the data its taking into consideration. Its not some hocus pocus. You see all the data.

You can control your hvac remotely. You can see what the weather and temp is at your house and inside your house. I suppose that if the power is out you'll be able to know that as well because the app will wont connect.

The app will give you a rating of the thermal efficiency of your home compared to data from other homes in the area. Its helpful.

Check your power company website for rebates on these units.

If you trying to manage a property remotely. This is absolutely your best bet and will save you money. 100%

If it ever breaks or otherwise becomes a problem, reinstall the old thermostat which you saved somewhere,

It is worth the the money because it will more than pay for itself in recurring savings.

I'd get my hand one of these if you can. Its a no brainer imo.

Mine has been anywhere from 10-20 degrees off the actual temp ever since I got it. I changed the calibration in the settings to adjust for that, but the max difference is 10 and I need more than that. It'll say 83 when it's actually 68. And then sometimes it'll say 83 when it's 76. Just seems to be all over the place and I'm having to constantly change it based on the real temp.

How long have you had it? I would have returned it that week! It's clearly not working, and your workaround is a terrible solution.

I've had one unit 5+ years with no issues, and added a second one when my downstairs A/C was replaced last summer. Haven't had a single hitch.

I've run into an issue with my Ecobee (I think).

On Wednesday, I got an alert on my phone that the Ecobee had been trying to cool the house for several hours, but the temperature in the house was increasing. I turned the AC off, waited a couple minutes, turned it on, and AC started working correctly.

I had AC guy come out to check my AC system, and everything looked good, and the AC was blowing well.

Last night the same thing happened last night. Everything worked well most of the night, until I noticed the temp rising right before I wake up. I turned everything off and then on again, and system worked again.

AC guy suggested replacing the Ecobee. He said they used to recommend it early on, but have had so many issues with it, he no longer recommends them. He said he suggests an Emerson Sensei now.

I had a similar issue a month or two ago where it would kick the unit on but only the blower. Luckily I had an identical ecobee installed for my downstairs AC so I swapped the faceplate and confirmed that fixed the problem before I bought a new one. If you have an older manual thermostat maybe try that first, or buy the cheapest one at home depot before dropping money on a new smart one?

Single AC house so can't do that. The dudes coming back out to do a more thorough inspection before replacing the ecobee.

Last time I replaced it I blew a fuse so not anxious to do it again.

Weird question.

So when I had the ecobee, when the AC kicked on, the lights would noticeably dim for a split second, when we always assumed was just due to the power surge kicking the AC on.

Now that we have the new Emerson Sensi, we notice little to no dimming occurring when it kicks on.

There's no reason why this should be the case right or am I missing something?

Wow. It'd be hard to go to a Sensi after an Ecobee. Any reason you switched?

I take it you didn't make any other changes at the time you installed the thermostat? Like adding a hard start kit to the compressor?

Assuming nothing else changed, my (admittedly uneducated) guess would be that you've got some kind of two or multi-stage system, and when it needed the second stage the Ecobee would sometimes go straight from off to high, and maybe the Sensi is starting with the lower stage first, then ramping up?
Comeby!

I have something similar with my Nest temp sensors. I just disabled them and sometimes they work.

The AC would "turn on" twice last week" but wasn't cooling the house. Both times, I turned the AC off, waited for a few, and turned it back on it ran normally.

AC guy came out and checked, and everything looked good. He mentioned he used to recommend the Ecobee, but stopped because of the complaints. His "go-to" has been the Sensi, so we figured we'd try it and see if we have the same issues.

While I was replying to this, the AC kicked on with no dimming of the lights, yet with the ecobee, it was guaranteed. Wonder if something wasn't set up right or whatever that it's running smoother now.
