We have a detached garage that is sheethed in plywood with 1x covering the joints. They are all rotted and need to be pulled and replaced before a repaint.

That said, is it acceptable to use pre-primed common pine boards?

Why not use hardi or cement and have it last

Plywood is rotted in a few places as well. That is getting replaced

hodgesco,

Before you pull the trigger on the pine boards, check out the LP (Louisiana Pacific) Smart Side product at a place like Home Depot.

LP Smart Side

My dad bought pine for years because it was cheap, and invariably I'd have to do maintenance on it for him.

When he needed a roof on a building he owned, the entire fascia board had to be replaced, and he said he'd be right back with some 'wood'.

Instead, I told him I'd handle it, and I bought some Smart Side. Yes, I still primed it before I put it up, but that stuff is fantastic. It's fairly cheap and it's easy to cut and nail.

I put some in (5) years ago and it looks brand new.

Another vote for LP smartside. Much easier than hardie to work with for small fixes like this.
