Can confirm, at our old place a couple of doors near some red tips some genius planted next to the house were always a little odd. The other problem was that they grow like crazy and would cover up the windows in the living room if you let them go more than a few months at a time.

Anyone heard of Elaeagnus? Someone told me that this was a viable option

Yes, I have many - both in hedges and stand alones. They are fast growing, evergreen, hardy in cold, heat and drought and put out small berries for wildlife. I have some branches reaching over twenty feet tall mixed in with tall pine trees.

Years ago I needed privacy everygreen hedges and it was a good choice to include. I'm Zone 8/9.

Any of you have any Leyland Cypress? From what I read, they're good for privacy and noise blocking. However, I read a lot about blight and other diseases affecting them...is this common, or is the risk overstated?

I've tried them several times and never really had much success.

Require water and get canker. Not as hardy as other choices.

Another wax myrtle fan here.

Put a couple in last Fall.

I plan on pruning them into trees, but they are great either way for screening. Evergreen, and grow pretty fast.

Same here. Love them. We had some planted st our old house and they grew 10-15 ft tall pretty quick. Trimmed them as trees too, provided privacy from two story house behind us into our back yard. Word of caution is let them get several good main trunks before trimming into trees. One of ours I did not allow to get good trunks and it kept breaking in storms. Eventually had to cut it down and dig it up. That was a pain in the back side.
