What's the problem with a small bend? I live in a 40 year old house with mature trees. Some of them are growing at about a 60 degree angle.

It's not bending toward either stake but toward the street.

either way, the bend looks fine to me... and I would say the stake is not needed.

Yep. Take out the stakes. Doing more harm than good at this point. Don't worry about the bend.

Most likely the stake that caused the bend.

The Dirt Doctor would say covering up the root flare is bad.

I had a tree that had a similar bend in it that I staked to straighten out and it looks great now. You have to stake it in the right spot(s) though. Your pic is showing you are actually helping it bow more, IMHO.

I know a lot of folks say don't stake at all, but I was very successful staking mine properly for the intended results I got. 5 yrs ago the tree was < 4' tall and now it is close to 20' (Chinquapin Oak) with a really nice straight trunk.

...and yeah, you are smothering the bottom of that tree....show some of the root flare.

I'll add, if you are going to stake, it needs to be on a minimum of 3 sides.

If you only hold 1 side, when the wind blows, you'll stretch and ultimately bend in the direction of the 1 side. Physics.

The builder staked the tree on 2 sides. The other stake is hidden by the trunk.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Many immature trees do this. This is part of living in newer construction. Once the tree is more mature, the bend will probably be non-existent.

Good deal.

I think I'm just going to pull the stakes and let it be.

My grandfather called himself a "tree torturer". He'd put tires on branches in young trees. He'd also graft them into odd shapes. I'm not sure he'd worry too much about a bent tree.

The grafting is interesting, but sorry, what's the point of the tire?

Judging by the trunk and the bark... that tree is WAY more than 1 year old. It's probably going too need some pruning going forward to thin out those lower branches

To clarify, the house is 11 months old. The tree was planted at the house 11 months ago.

Ha - no point really. I guess he liked the absurdity.

My grandfather always thought it'd be funny if years later someone would walk thru the woods and wonder how in the heck did a tire get in the top of a tree.
