time for a new fence. I had a new one put in about 7 yrs ago at my old house that was:

Posts 4x4 Western Red Cedar
Rails 2x4x8 #2 Western Red Cedar
Pickets 1x6x6 #2 Western Red Cedar

What would a reasonable price be for the above materials, $/ft?

My current neighborhood has fences that are "Shadowbox":

any ideas on price for this style?

Call someone like McCoys and price out an 8' section's worth of materials, then multiply by the number of 8' sections you have. Ask them what the actual dimensions are. The 6" width of the pickets may only be 5.5", or they could be a full 6".

Materials would be (per http://www.mgbuildingmaterials.com/):
1x6 6' "Western Red" DOG EAR CEDAR $3.79/EA
4X4 8' ROUGH CEDAR $17.17/EA
2X4 8' ROUGH CEDAR $7.20/EA

Avg $11.60 (w tax) per foot for the wood of just normal fencing. Increased for gates, corners, hardware, sakrete etc.

would likely depend a great deal on where you are, at least in terms of labor.

If you are in Austin, I paid pflugerville pfence 19/ft for the same setup 18 mos ago and was happy with the job.

Yes, in Austin. I paid $17.28/linear ft for demo of old fence, haul off, materials and labor including 3 gates of new fence using the wood listed in my original post. That was in 2010.

Couple of months ago I replaced mine. Used a dedicated fence company, been in business locally for 20+ years in B/CS. $2.50/lf to tear out. $14.50 to put in. Cedar pickets, treated 2x4 rails (3) and treated 4x4 posts. Gates were extra, roughly $280 each.

Not sure if this helps, but I just had a guy start my fence.

He quoted $14/LF

Included:

New 4x4s in concrete
Three row runners
Treated Pickets
Galvanized nails
Haul off of the old stuff.

I negotiated down to $11/ LF and he's working on it as we speak.

I've now gotten five quotes in DFW for metal posts, side-by-side cedar pickets, treated runners, treated kick board, piece of top trim, and no gates. Three quotes came in right at $37/LF. One quote came in at $30/LF. Another quote came in at $23/Lf.

It's 280 LF of fence and includes haul off.
