We really small front yard I'm thinking of re sodding this spring and I've had several bids done to add irrigation to it and it's all way to expensive. I was thinking why not just add a timer to my hose bib and run some buried PVC pipe to a couple of pop up sprinkler heads to water the yard? Will this type of set up work?

You will need a Vacuum Breaker installed or you risk the vacuum of the line sucking contaminated water back into your water supply.

Home Depot has vacuum breakers for < $100.

You also need to install it above grade like it shows in the picture.

But doing a small sprinker system yourself if pretty easy.

Vacuum breaker $50-80
PVC Pipe $50?
Sprinkler Valve or two (depending on how many zones you need / want) $12 per valve
Sprinklers $8-12 per sprinkler
Cheap Sprinkler timer $30-$50

As a licensed irrigator... you need to find out what kind of backflow your city requires. Pvb, double check, rpz. The most jacked up repairs that we work on are usually homeowner diy systems.

I just used my hose bib on my first house. Hose bib, 4 way timer/splitter, then into flex pvc I buried to different parts around the yard, then had your typical sprinklers you find at HD.. the spike, the old school kind you run through as a kid, etc. Worked great.. cost maybe $100.

I am in the middle of a bunch of projects inside the house, but I am considering a "drip" style system in my front yard and have considered DIY as well.

Which part are you confused with?

OP has a small front yard that he is resodding. Rather than pay someone an exorbitant amount of money to put an irrigation system in, he is inquiring about doing a DIY sprinkler system.
