Wife and I are both turning 40 this year and have decided to gift each other weekend trips of whatever the other wants to do. I've decided I want a golf trip. I'm looking for somewhere that would have at least two great courses to play, but would also be fun to visit outside of the golf (Nice dining, spa, great scenery, historical, etc.). If you could go anywhere in the continental US for three days or so, where would you go?

Also, I'm not a member of a club that could help me get on anywhere, so have to limit it to public courses.

Budget? What time of year? How important are activities for your wife?

In order of cost:

Hyatt Tamaya Resort north of Albuquerque. Casino close, many great golf options. May-Oct so you can play Pako Ridge

St. Georges, Utah. Lots of good golf, Casinos right across the border, Zion and Bryce Canyon close. Must play Wolf Creek.

Charleston and/or Savannah

Vegas - generally not a fan of anything but their really high end golf

Hilton Head

Reno/Tahoe

Big Cedar, MO - maybe not enough for your wife to do if she isn't golfing

Sedona, AZ. Four Seasons Resort, limited, but good golf, great hiking

Santa Barbara, CA - Stay at the Ojai Valley Inn and play there and Sandpiper

Broadmoor is a good option

Palm Springs - shoulder season April/May and Sept/Oct otherwise really expensive

Scottsdale or Tucson - really expensive Nov-April, don't want to go June-Sept

Cabo

Monterrey Peninsula, Kiawah, Kohler - probably the least amount for your wife to do at Kohler other than Spa/Resort

Budget is open to anything. Not really concerned about entertainment for wife while I'm playing golf, but would like there to be other things to do for both of us. We are not really lay around a resort kind of people. I was thinking golf half the day, and then there be something the two of us could do together the other half of the day. Whether that is an actual activity or just exploring the area.

Orlando. The Disney Lake Buena Vista course is fun and right across from Disney Springs. Lots of other great courses in Orlando, too. We have stayed in most of the Disney properties, but now we stay at the Hilton Grand Vacation resorts. HGV Tuscany Village is awesome, and located right next to an outlet mall. We love Orlando for trips. Plenty to do besides Disney. (But if you can time your trip during either the Flower & Garden Festival or the Food & Wine Festival, you'll have a blast at EPCOT.) Do a day together at Discovery Cove, too.

Also consider climate.

Monterey Bay will be always 40 to 60's year round. Not sure when you're planning the trip, but some of the locations to me are pretty hot and humid in the summer, unless that's what you like?

You'll always need a sweater in the evening here except for 2 days in September and October. Monterey does fit the bill per your description. Pebble Beach coastline is very unique and probably one of the most beautiful scenery you'll experience. There are at least 2 great golf courses here. Sure Pebble....but I prefer Poppy Hills over Spanish Bay and Spyglass. I actually like Spyglass better than Pebble....

Then there's Cypress Pointe

History?

Jack, Tiger and Tom Watson won US Open here..

Bandon Dunes!! But it's booked for next two years so maybe not want to wait that long.

Second Hyatt Tamaya or St. Georges

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island teamed with Charleston has my vote. Just a heads up though that it's a walking course for 9 months out of the year. They have a handful of other courses on the island to choose from.

I'm a fan of Pinehurst - plenty of world-class courses (with varying degrees of difficulty and cost), a nice spa and great dining options at the resort and in the village (plus the amazing breakfast buffet at the Carolina hotel every morning).

Maybe reverse engineer this and choose a city you want to visit and then look at the two nicest courses there? Most cities have good options. Like Vegas/Henderson area, for example.

Old Waverly/Mossy Oak are next door to each other, but not much else to do in the suburbs of Starkville, MS. Unless you wanna catch a MS State sporting event.

Lake Charles has the casinos that are next door to each other and each has a course. But they aren't "golf trip destination" courses. Although they are nice.

I might be headed to Scottsdale in July for a bachelor party. Are you saying no to that month because of the heat or another reason?

It's the hottest month of the year. It's hot. It's also monsoon season. This past July the monsoon was real after 2 dry years. The overseed has died so course conditions aren't the best. Check conditions at the courses you want to play. Get the first tee time at 6AM. Sun comes up around 530 and sets around 730 because no daylight savings time. The good news is green fees are the best of the year.

I enjoyed our trip to Hilton Head. An hour drive from Savannah, and has a ton of golf courses.

As the other poster said - Hot, hot, hot. Courses aren't in their usual condition. But, rates are lower.

110-115 - but it's dry heat!

Actually, if you can get up north it really isn't too bad. For instance, Desert Mountain (private) is at 3000' of elevation and rarely gets to 100. I would say you need to play north of Grayhawk or at least nothing south of there unless heat doesn't bother you.

I was in Scottsdale end of May last year and one of the days we played it got to mid 90's......It was nothing like the mid 90's of Texas. I wouldn't bat an eye going in July to play and take advantage of the cheaper rates. Yes it is hot, but wear sunscreen, floppy hat, drink water, and drink beer and you will be good.

I work outside all day so I'm more used to the heat than most. However, I imagine there's going to be lots of alcohol the nights before rounds so it may be rough.

Me too. But, does your whole group work outside? You could get lucky and have decent weather, or get really unlucky and bake.
Stay out of the valley and get as far north as you can and you should be fine.

I'd do St. George and play Sand Hollow and then make the drive to Mesquite and play Wolf Creek. Sand Hollow has some of the most incredible tee shots you will ever play.

We played wolf and sand Hollow in October. Great golf. But not sure st George and Mesquite trip has anything else beside golf and zion.

I just came back from 2 day trip to Indian Wells/Palm Springs.

Not a single blade of grass out of place at the Indian Wells resort. And the weather was just heavenly 70s.

We stayed at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa on our honeymoon 11 years ago. Great getaway spot, and the golf is good.

The Silverado in Napa is another one.

I would say if you could Cabot in Nova Scotia and visit Newfoundland as well. It was amazing when I went when I was young and a friend said the golf is top notch even if a bit isolated.

I know that doesn't fit your continental US but if in summer or early fall it could be an option.

My thoughts now are someplace that would fit in some nice golf but have nightlife for a couple

I think this is going to be it. Destination we haven't been to and great golf. Thanks

can you get into Canada right now? If so you might look into Banff.....quick flight from Texas and mother****er the golf and scenery there is beautiful. Easy drive from Calgary and several great courses to choose from. Wife and I went a few years ago and it is perfect spot for a long weekend. Did I mention the golf is great.

Banff Springs
