Putting aside all the things people hate about scrambles, let's say everyone here loves golf scrambles. Let's also say you paid to play in them. What is the most you would pay to play, depending on the quality of the course?(Yes I know they are typically for fundraising)

I'll use college station courses(and just to keep the Miramont is better than Traditions argument at bay I'm listing Miramont separate from Traditions due to exclusivity)

1 Star (Briarcrest)
2 Star (Campus Course/Pebble Creek)
3 Star (Traditions)
4 Star (Miramont)

Also, what's the highest cost you've seen for a scramble? What was the reason for that price(as far as you can discern?).

Scrambles used to run around 100 bucks a person. The norm now in my experience is 150-200 a piece regardless of the course. Most expensive one I've played in was 500 a piece, Based solely off prestige and the market it was gunning for.
I will not pay to play on a course that's normally drastically cheaper than the scramble entry fee either. Prime example would be paying 150 bucks to play briarcrest..... Not going to happen

My BIGGEST pet peeve with these tournaments now is after dropping hundreds of dollars on the entry fee I'm normally accosted every other hole for more money with gimmicky carnival golf games..... Don't do that.
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

I hate scrambles for all the reasons listed in Bonds post. Seems like every scramble I get invited to now is $100 plus at a twenty dollar course and food and drinks aren't even included. I get most are for a good cause but don't Rake me over the coals in the process

Would not pay to play in a scramble unless the course were Pebble, Augusta, you get the idea...

I do play in them periodically for work. An expensive scramble can run $10K/team (of 4).

A&M club in corpus does about $150 a person plus another $50 a person for a "game package" includes mulligans , poker golf etc.

But it's free beer and the at the best course (Private)in corpus so there's a couple draws.

I pay to play real golf and let the company pay for scrambles. I have a hard time enjoying a scramble when the entry fee is more than the regular cost to play a course.

My attitude exactly. I don't think I've ever paid to play in a scramble.

As someone who has put on many many golf tournaments, the well run ones typically have a foursome package that already includes all the extras (mulligans, raffle tickets, easy eagle, etc etc) and then a cheaper just golf foursome.

Most in my industry for local gulf coast events are around $600-$700 just for a foursome.

I think the biggest one I do personally with all the "sponsor add ons" is in Greenville SC. We normally sponsor at $7000, and that is the minimum level to get 4 players. Anything less gets you two players and you can't add individual players. Those are really nice courses though and I really look forward to them.

I do a scramble with work every year at TPC in San Antonio. $150 includes:

- round on either the Oaks or Canyons
- lunch and dinner
- complimentary drinks and snacks on the course (soda, water, beer, chips, crackers, etc)
- goody bag (sleeve of balls, koozie, towel, tees, snacks, all in some type of bag, + discounted replay)

- an additional $35 gets you into the casino night after the dinner.
- mulligans are something like $10 each or 3 for $20
- one hole is $20 each player to shoot a golf ball out of a cannon. If everyone in the group does it - automatic eagle on the scorecard. This was just added this past year. Not a big fan of this. I want to play golf.

When stuff like this and unlimited mulligans became a thing the scores started to get.... Excuse my language, ******ed.

That's when most of the fun left for me. I love golf way too much, I don't drink when I play. I take it pretty seriously as well..... All of those things are the antithesis of scrambles now

Are you asking about charity or business networking type scrambles?

Since you said to assume we all love scrambles, my answer to how much I'd pay is that it completely depends on what cause I'm supporting, or network I'm engaged with.

The golf and event experience of a scramble is an absolute ripoff.

I play a scramble every year and we pay 85 bucks and its always on a Austin muni course. It includes free beer, free lunch, goodie bag, and random door prizes. They also have two CTP's and two long drives prizes as well.

I say it every year when this topic comes up but my favorite scramble I play in is one where there are no mulligans, no string, etc. there is even a cart girl that goes with every group that keeps score. I guess that in theory you could get her to cheat, but in general it keeps the scores somewhat honest.

Every other scramble I play in, I treat it more like a drinking game than golf. Just out there to have fun. I probably wouldn't pay more than $50 over what the course typically costs, and it better come with free drinks and food.

I play 15-20 or so work related scrambles per year. They ruin my game and typically are not fun for the golf.

Things that non-golfers love during large scambles. These are also things avid golfers dislike.

1 - potato cannon golf ball shooter for 20 dollars per person
2 - drone dops for 100 per person
3 - long drive tour guys. these are entertaining, but i am still not giving money so you can hit my ball.

Things that golfers tolerate and like during large scrambles

1 - start on time
2 - par is your friend
3 - start at a reasonable time and leave at a reasonable time

I've gotten to where I'll play company paid scrambles, but I won't pay. Actually been doing this for awhile now. And I'll generally only do a scramble if it's a group of guys I want to play with. Trying to win one of these has become pretty ridiculous where I am, so I firstly want to be sure I'm going to have fun with the guys I'm with.

Many years ago I was invited to play with 2 other guys I really didn't know well. But there were some business connection reasons, so I went ahead and played. The other 3some we were supposed to play with didn't show up, so it was just us. Something one of the other guys said early made me feel a little suspicious of his scoring, so I kept a card too. When we got done, he had us about 7 or 8 shots better than we actually shot. I told him that wasn't the right score and started pointing out where he had gotten it wrong. He said "well, we can turn your card in if you want to." I said "mine's right, so that's what we're turning in." Made sure to get to the scorer's table first. Still pisses me off that he thought I would go along with the cheating.

I played in a scholarship tournament at Cinco Ranch last month. The winning team shot -14 under with a team handicap of 35. So their adjusted score is came out to 22.

I don't care if I win. I just like to have fun and enjoy time with customers or vendors. But it does bother me that some cheat without any shame.

mm98 - thanks for that reply. 7k is crazy!

I just asked the questions because I came across a scramble listed with an entry fee for 2500 (4 man). That shocked me and I laughed rather hard. It is an exclusive course but hearing 7k that's mind blowing. But I do get that the intent is to get companies to raise money for a cause.

Like most of you I don't dig deep in my pockets for scrambles because I prefer to play "real golf" and rather more competitive than the people I play with.

I also remember one of the first Gary Blair scrambles having a choice of FJ shoes, wedge, or a few other options included in the goodie bag for each player so that was rather nice. Haven't found my way back to that scramble as I think it gets so much action from corporate sponsors.

I was also hoping to get a different side of the scramble talk. I should have known better by now.

i play a tournament every year with a bunch of engineers and oilfield guys. watching everyone warm up on the driving range is hilarious. shank city and flailing everywhere. somehow though every year there are 3-5 teams that post scores in the mid-high 50's on a pretty difficult course with no cheats except for a mulligan per person per 9 (if you want to buy them). there aren't four A players in the entire field but somehow those scores keep creeping lower.

it's a beautiful course though and my company pays for it so i keep going and just enjoy a day of networking out of the office.

Ask any HEB vendor. How about $5,000 per golfer. $15,000 for three (HEB supplies your 4th)

They will "raise" ~ $10,000,000 in a week of activities

It doesn't take all the extra stuff for the scores to get ****ed. It just takes a pencil. And that's why I hate playing scrambles.

I won't pay to play in them, but I do play for work when invited by customers.

To be clear that also gets us a dinner invitation to the previous nights reception and the following days trade show.

I also forgot there is a major energy company in the San Antonio area that has a tournament for fundraising every year and if you're a vendor that wants to be taken seriously it's pretty much $25K at a minimum. And that gets you an employee with decision making ability of an HR Assistant. If you want major engineers or procurement you're probably shelling out 40-50K.

I've been a HS golf coach for over 20 years, plus have worked a golf course for awhile. I've been a part of many scrambles. The ones, where they nickel and dime you are the worst. Our booster club scramble is $125 a person or $500 a team. This gets you: Lunch, 2 drink tickets, club valet to load and clean your clubs, a goody bag with quality stuff that will last and remind you of where you've been, mulligan tickets, and raffle tickets. We make our money off silent auction stuff and corporate sponsorships. Quality of golf course helps. I live in Lubbock area, so once we moved our scramble to The Rawls Course, we could charge a bit more, and also picked up more teams.
