Was reading they are open to the public. While am aware of none in Houston any of you folks tried? Any good ones? You must have to do something to get credentials to get access? Do you know what that takes? Green fees?

The only courses I'm aware of are Army courses (and that is a very limited few). I know Navy, MC and AF bases all require CAC cards to enter the station. Unless you are escorted.
God,....I really hate the sips!

I've played a few in San Diego. Some are on base, others are off. Ones on base you must have tee time in advance and go through a special gate. It can be a bit of a pain.

Usually the courses are in pretty good shape. I'm done playing at Miramar (home of Top Gun) due to poor management.

I've played a few AF base courses, and wasn't aware they were open to the pubilc without an active escort or active member of the base making the tee time for you.

Falcon Dunes next to Luke AFB in Phoenix has been my favorite. Runs right next to runways so you can watch F16s take off and land throughout the round.

I've played the course at Fort Hood and Ryder and Stryker Courses at Fort Bragg. On par a municipal course in a given city. Great way to practice your game and save a lot of money. Good deal for active duty or retired members to hit the course right after work or on a day off.

Green fees are based on Rank, privates will pay less than Senior enlisted and officers. I've play 18 with cart for $20 as a CPT

I have played the 2 courses at Fort Sam here in San Antonio. One of them is actually a Tillinghast design. The Salado course is a great layout. Condition ranges from fair to very good depending on rain. They cannot irrigate as much in the summer due to aquifer limitations.

I have booked several rounds through Golf Now. The caveat here is you can get bumped for a soldier. Hasn't happened to me yet but came close once.

The pace of play can be very slow on weekends.

The Randolph and Lackland AFB courses have been showing up on Tee Off.com but have not played them yet.

i think you can walk on to admiral baker in san diego and theres a course in norfolk that you can walk on to. sea and air on coronado can not be walked on to but its a really cool course.

Yep, Admiral Baker is not actually on a base, just funded by it. Makes it much easier to get to. Nice complex they have.

Miramar and Pendleton are on property but open to public, where as Sea and Air need an invite.

Sea and Air on Coronado is a neat course for sure.

I played the Camp Pendleton course numerous times. As a young Lance Corporal I think it was only $8 to walk 18. Fun course.

Air Force Academy Blue Course is outstanding. The Silver Course is shorter, but also great.

Those two are hard to beat, but hard to get on to, also.

Last time I played Andrews it was like a cow pasture in comparison. Very disappointed in the condition.

We used to play at White Sands pretty regular a few years back. Often we were the only ones on the course

As a junior, I played up in Wichita Falls for several years in the Texas-Oklahoma golf tournament, "TO" if you will.

It was held on several different courses, but the round out at Sheppard Air Force base would always separate the contenders from the pretenders. That was always a "hold on to your butts" type of round.

They had a reciprocal with Ft. Sill when I was stationed. Wintertime Shepard would be playable when Sill had snow.

Done some skunking around, was told for Randolph & Lackland you can get a six month pass but you must pass a background check. Assume you start at the Visitors Center to obtain and apparently for Ft Sam you can get to without going on the Post? No clue if you get a pass in SA if it would work elsewhere.

jgh85 you got options. I'd like to play the Tillinghast course you mentioned.

Fort Sam has access direct to the course without going through the base.

Check out golf now. For great rates at Sam.

Randolph isn't much better than a muni. Only interesting part is you can't hear yourself think on certain holes because you're next to the runway.

Most of the things that you're thinking on the golf course is wrong anyway, so I figure that would only help.

If in FL, NAS Pensacola has a great 27 hole course that is open to the public, also Elgin AFB has solid public course that is off base and open to the public.
