Never experienced blatant cheating in these things before, but I played in a company scramble (small one for charity) and ended up with our Channel President on the team.

Started poorly and made par on an easy par 5, and played pretty well the rest of the round given wet conditions.

Since we were so far ahead of the team behind us (and the group in front was on the green) we decided to play that hole again coming in. Made birdie.

When he was about to turn in our scorecard I saw he recorded the birdie for that hole. Probably did my career a small disservice by telling him we couldn't turn that score in, especially since we missed out on second by one stroke (to the other President's team) and would have won a SC playoff.

Good on you for not cheating, but man charity scrambles are so bad it's almost expected

Tough one there.

Maybe the president will give you more respect now or you've just created a ceiling.

You shouldn't have looked.
And if you did, you should have pretended you didn't see it.
I definitely wouldn't call out a superior in a charity scramble.

Your name is on that card just as much as his. Good on you for saying something.

Maybe it's my own delusion but I swear scrambles 10 years ago used to be so much more honest in my experience. 62 used to actually win them. Now with all the extra strokes bought and rampant cheating a 55 won't even get you in the top 3. I don't even play them anymore unless I absolutely have to
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

I still find them fun. But I also go in knowing we aren't winning it.

And shame on any organizer that gives out anything of value for top finishes.

This is one of those situations where having some slick tact is a good skill, i.e. you take action to get it corrected but do so in a manner to where you appear to think it was just an honest mistake.

I go in to them with the same view I go into gambling at casinos. Did I have fun and was I entertained? If yes, then winning anything is cherry.

IMO, playing the extra hole makes you as complicit as the guy turning in the scorecard. Saying something to him about it is just grandstanding.

Yeah, I would be curious about what the conversation included (and didn't) when y'all decided to play the hole again. If you did it an a way where one could infer that y'all were deciding to give yourselves a do-over (i.e. you didn't make it clear it was just for fun to kill time), then this score making as far as it did is somewhat on you. Doesn't make it right, but he may have been under the impression you all agreed to cheat at the time you replayed it.

It's a charity scramble. I'm not going to cheat or call out those who do. Just enjoy a day outside the office.

It's the guy who gets to use the remote control and decide what you're all gonna watch on tv. I'm the channel president of my house.

We played it again since we didn't want to wait 30 min at the clubhouse for all the other teams to arrive and turn in their score. My riding partner and I both didn't even think to ask if we were going to possibly keep this score.

Very large corporations have various business channels, and the men/women who lead them are presidents. I think it is a stupid title as well.

Cheating in a charity scramble is like saying it's stealing to walk out and grab a couple balls on the range once your bucket is empty.

It's not a big deal and everyone does it. Hell most of them encourage it with selling birdie tickets, string, Tiger drives, etc.

yeah...they're pretty bad. i played in an oilfield tournament a week ago where the winning team turned in a scorecard with a 54 on it...there was not a team in the entire (smallish) tournament capable of sniffing even the low 60's...particularly with how sloppy the conditions were. i played with three guys who were a lot worse than me (90% of the field were engineers and good old boys who looked like they'd never swung a club) which is really saying something because i am not good. at all. we played it honestly and turned in an 81.

to make it even uglier, our group was the next to last to play the long drive hole. i was able to move the marker in the middle of the fairway and put my name on it after one of only 3 good drives on the day. i watched from the green as a guy from the group behind us casually walked up to his drive and with a one handed club swing punched his ball out of the rough into the fairway and then foot wedged the ball again right past the long drive marker to crown himself long drive winner. that group then played that ball. the prize was a $75 clubhouse credit. i guess he did it for pride?

either way, i really enjoyed being on a great golf course and not in the office that day but the awards ceremony felt dirty as hell.

Same here. Me and my buddies just enjoy not working and don't give a crap about where we finish. As Charlie Epps said, "Its amazing what a guy will do for a free umbrella."

Industry scrambles are the worst. Bunch of hacks who play twice a year somehow shooting -18 and hitting 400 yd drives.

Just enjoy the food/drinks, try to make a few great shots, and have fun.

I expect cheating at scrambles and just have a good time. That said, I don't join in on the cheating, and if someone in my group is gonna do it and put my name on it, that's where I start to get uncomfortable. i wouldn't make a production of it, but if there's a subtle approach to take that could avoid/correct it, I would.

I've gotten very skeptical at these things. I played in a charity scramble yesterday at La Cantera and 55 was the winning score. The greens were very hard and very fast. Where some of the pins were, I can't imagine shooting 55. I might have had more fun following that group around.

As an aside, on one of the holes they had an AR-15 modified to shoot a golf ball. $10 to do it, and it counted as your drive if you wanted it. It was fun. Ball flew pretty squirrelly.

Played in one recently where the winning team turned in a 42 ... when you can just buy your way through the whole tournament with all the added drives, mulligans, hand wedges etc ... it stops being golf and starts being just donating to charity (which is really what the organizers want, but it's not something I'm going to spend six hours of my weekend on again)

Scrambles are not golf. The rules and etiquette of golf do not apply to tournaments where you can buy mulligans, shorter putts, tee off from the ladies tee's and my personal favorite of the two putt max.

Actually won one of these this year with a really good team and a score of 58. Used all ten of our mulligans and we only had three players so one of us got to go twice on a rotation which was huge. We got a trophy and I have no idea where it is. I got zero satisfaction out of it. Weird.

Fun day of golf with your buddies.

I played a 4some scramble Friday in Spring. Conditions were still very wet from all the rain we've been getting. Some drive got plugged or rolled for zero feet.

Someone turned in a 51 (par 71). Average score was closer to 61-63.

Literally everyone rolled their eyes...

Scrambles I have played, misunderstanding of the rules resulted in someone cheating without purpose. For instance, alternate drives, mulligan unlimited, move the ball, and so on. Gets confusing and most just don't care.

Played in a scramble that was pretty backed up. We counted the strokes of the team in front of us. They turned in 8 better than they should and won by 2 strokes.

In any scramble I play in there is a cap of bogey for every hole.

While that may not be cheating it's certainly not within the rules of golf.
