Graphite vs. Steel Shafts

It just dawned on me yesterday that I've got steel shafts (stiff) in all of my irons, and graphite (regular) in my driver, 3 wood, and hybrid.

Now that I am making a commitment to the game, wouldn't it make sense to have steel shafts (stiff) in all of my clubs for the sake of consistency?

My irons are Ping G5's, and probably 10-12 years old.
My driver, 3 wood, and hybrid are Cobra's, and 5 years old.

Get properly fitted for everything.

Then check if jj or khaos have what you need before buying off the shelf

No one plays steel shafts in driver, 3 wood, hybrid. Well, someone may, but no one I can think of off the top of my head.

No steel in the woods. If anything, you may consider graphite in your irons (whenever you change irons, would not try to retrofit G5's). Back in the day, graphite shafts in irons were basically for old men to help them generate swing speed. Good for the low swing speed, but bad for consistency if you are capable generating clubhead speed. But these days, they play a lot more like a steel shaft where you can get the benefit of the lighter shaft but not the inconsistent whippy factor of the old graphite iron shafts.

There are quite a few tour players with graphite shafts in their irons (like Kuchar and Snedeker). You just have to get what fits you.

I actually do play steel shafts in my hybrids, but they are driving iron style heads.

I have the exact same shaft from my 3i-4i (hybrids), all the way down my irons into my wedges.

I got fitted for that, and for the shafts I have in my 3wood, and driver.

Best money I've spent since starting.

Consider replacing all your clubs every 5 yrs.

Steel shafts in the irons.
Graphite for the woods.
Putter steel

I have NS 950 steel in my cobra hybrids 4,5,6,and 7. Light weight steel. Need it for low torque. 2 and 3 hybrids have graphite.

Firm believer in steel shaft with shock dampener in irons.

This set up is just fine.

G5 irons aren't all that different than each G series successor that followed. Minimal differences. I think DA Points still plays the i5 series from that same release period (may be someone else).

Also...those Cobras are just fine as well. .830 COR = .830 COR. OEMs maxed it out 5 years ago, at the same measurement as they do today.

Google "Rick Shiels 5 year Driver" if you want hard data.

Bottom line = If you really are itching to spend money, your money may be better spend on lessons than on equipment.

Unless you like to buy new shiny stuff...then buy a bunch of new s***.

I know. Set him up with a new sucker, I mean client, and he punts the lead.

Not looking to buy new clubs.
I'll roll with what I've got for another 5 years.
I was fitted for the G5's.

Then it's a no-brainer. Keep what you've got. Especially if you were fitted into the G5s.

Inconsistently.
When it's good, it's great.
I tend to see a slice on hybrid shots, whereas not often at all on my irons.

I believe stiff steel can help your hybrid shots.

Why, I have no idea, but when I started updating my clubs in the mid-00's, I parted ways with a Callaway Warbird 4+ that had a stiff steel shaft. I connected on shots so well. Dumbest decision ever.
