So, last summer I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at the ripe old age of 37. Due to the uncertainty of the progression of the disease my family's(my wife and I) priorities shifted some. We decided we wanted to make some memories together. So she decided to pick up the game of golf(I quit asking after 3 years) so we could make those memories down that road! *(Disclaimer I'm in a good place surrounded by good people in regards to the Parkinson's. I make light of it and make shake/tremor jokes on myself more than any of my "friends" )

So in early January we began discussing our trip this summer and it began with "go to Florida again or maybe California?" It soon escalated to Hawaii and then let's make it next year to Hawaii so we can make it worth it. Come mid-February I became super busy with work(teaching/coaching) and the vacation trip talk had died down. Late March I came home from practice and woke the PC up as my wife was walking up behind me and yelled, "Don't loooooook! Close your eyes!" Which I almost did in time. I saw "Your trip has been booked!" I wasn't sure where we were going but she was trying to make it a surprise. She decided not tot tell me where we were going, but her mom spoiled that during Easter break as some of us were having conversation about having a family trip within the next few years.

So in early summer we went out for a birthday lunch and her and my kids surprised me with a folder with the itinerary for our vacation. 13 days in Maui with 6-10 days set aside for golf and let me tell ya, I don't know that I've received another gift that caused me to smile that big my entire life.

I ended up playing 8 rounds of golf(2 with the fam). We started in Wailea and played the Blue Course once, the Gold once and the Emerald twice. The first day was at the Blue and it started off frustrating witht the front desk person(I can go into detail later for anyone interested), and then walked over to the "range" and hit the crappiest range balls I would expect to see at a resort type course. Oh the range was 3 or 4 bays hitting into nets. Now I would never base my course judgement off of the range and glad I didn't because the course was fun, not too difficult and had some pretty good views. Of the Wailea courses it came in 3rd place, which would still fall in front of almost every other course I've ever played(apart from RTJ trail). The best memory made on that course with my wife was watching her make her first legit par on #4, double bogey #5 and follow that up with her first legit birdie on hole #6. (I've been making her putt them out until she'd make 1 and it's a great feeling now to be able to walk up and give her a 3 footer).

Day 2 of golf was on the Gold course. I received a slight discount on this course due to the fact that they had punched the greens 5 days prior. But to be honest the greens were the best greens after 5 days I had ever putted on. I played this course solo and was done within 3 hours(early tee time). I had a difficult time reading the greens on all of the Wailea courses. They'd appear to break gently the opposite way at times. Pace was easy to judge just rarely caught the right line 8+ feet out. The Gold was #2 ranked out of the Wailea courses in my opinion. The highlight was driving pin high par 4 #6(shorty hole) and nearly making eagle from the green side bunker.

The 3rd and 4th rounds of gold were at the Emerald course. There was so much scenery I kinda forgot to take pictures at times because I became so accustomed to it. Good thing I played it twice. It was definitely the best of the 3, hence why I played it twice. Greens were smooth, they put some top dressing on the greens and it was pretty slick. I putted best on this course of the 3 and had a handful of birdies but I'd have to say opening the first round there with a birdie on 1 or birdieing the #1 handicap during the 2nd round were the 1A/1B. I played each time with a few older couples and enjoyed meeting some neat people.I took more pictures than posted of this course but the resolution was pretty crappy.

So after the Wailea courses my family took our first adventure to the ocean and took a boat trip to Snuba(Scuba/Snorkel hybrid). Only my son was a champ and able to handle the choppy water so afterwards my wife decided that she would keep the kids home and I could take the ferry out to Lanai to play the Manele Golf Course! This was by far the best course I've ever played. I arrived on the island after about a 45min boat ride and a shuttle from the hotel was there to greet me. As I was escorted into the clubhouse and paid for the round $$$ the clubhouse personnel directed me to the complimentary breakfast items and then to the starter/pro. He gave me some "insider" tips and directed me to the range where I was hitting ProV1 practice balls(a step up from the Wailea Blue course balls. lol)

I played extremely well for no experience on the course which added to my favoritism towards this course. Hopefully I am able to properly include my 18th hole video because that was definitely my highlight hole. Beware a ton of pictures will probably be included. I honestly sucked at putting all vacation, but I redeemed myself on 18.

18th green putt for birdie-hit the worst tee shot all day into the sand. Sitting 165~ out I hit the front left of the green leaving a huge putt uphill for birdie.

18th green birdie putt at Manele Golf Course

I typically don't have others clean my clubs, but they treated me so well I tipped the clubwasher guy, tipped the waitress for my 8$ mango lemonade and both shuttle people without hesitation.

*I'll follow thru in this thread later with the Kapalua courses & extra curriculars to finish my stay in Maui.

Great thread and great pics - thanks for sharing. I love that Lanai course, I have had that par 3 by the ocean as one of my background pics for a long time. Its a beautiful course with with amazing views, and hardly anyone on it. It was years ago when I played it and it used to be called "The Challenge at Manale," but I guess they rebranded.

Keep posting - this is an awesome vacation and your family sounds awesome as well.

EDIT: Great birdie putt btw

Thanks Jon - gonna eat dinner with the family then I'll get busy with the rest of the pics! That par 3 is probably my favorite hole - Put my tee shot in the short right bunker. Thankfully I had plenty of practice getting out at the Emerald course that I got up and down.

Very blessed to have a sister that lives in oahu. Although I miss her it's a **** ton of fun visiting. Hawaii is the absolute best golf on the planet imo bar none. So many different terrains and styles to choose from and all beautiful. Golfed oahu and the big island. Maui for the plantation course is on for next trip
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

Our last 3 rounds during the last week in Maui were spent on the Kapalua resort. We were so much closer to the beach we spent a lot of our time there. However I did play twice at the Plantation course and once at the Bay course. Putting toward the ocean was with the grain and away from the ocean was against the grain at the Plantation course, but sometimes it didn't matter the putts would just be impossible to stop. I played the 1 ups and the tradewinds were blowing big and going uphill into that was no fun, especially on hole #9! I birdied # 12,14, 15,16(2 birdies each day) at the Plantation - best play was sticking a short iron in tap in range on # 14 into the blusterous wind. I would say it was ego boosting to hit the power slot down the right side of the fairway on 18 and get down to the ball knowing you probably couldn't have got any more roll due to the sever slope!

Bay course my wife played with me. Most memorable hole is the par 3 over the ocean, #5, and really the only other hole that sticks out was hole #4. I tapped in for birdie on the hole with the cherry blossoms(?) in the below picture and short par 5 downhill, downwind, #15. I had a very difficult time putting on both Kapalua courses. I hit 13 or 14 greens on the 2nd round on the Plantation and still only left with 2 birdies and a few 3 putts that day.

I'll add some extra curricular photos.

The strawberry creme pie at Monkeypod(Wailea) was absolutely the best dessert I ever had. And, I don't even really care for creme pies.

Awesome pics! There is nothing like Hawaii Golf imo. What a gift. And you've got a great looking family.

Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I saw an article a while back that seemed to show promising results in using testosterone replacement therapy in the treatment of Parkinson's (alzheimer's and a few others as well I believe) in males. Didn't really do much digging on it but thought it was interesting.

May want to do some internet research on that and maybe even talk to a doctor if you haven't already. If you're not afraid to give yourself shots, it would be pretty cheap, according to my uncle who is on TRT.

Thanks for the compliments! And Wycliffe, thanks for the PD look-up, I'll check it out. Exercise is looking as a great non-treatment plan(golf and boxing) if all else fails. So, I've got the golfing part down!
