Looking to do something within a days drive of San Antonio in mid July. AZ and Lajitas are pretty hot at that time. Any experience in Arky or Mizzou? Looking to spend 4 days and play 2 rounds a day. Would like to get out of TX. Suggestions?

Took a guys trip to Hot Springs Village in Arky about 12 years ago. Rented a condo. There were several nice courses there.

Anywhere is going to be hot in July, so good luck with that! You could try RTJ trail in Alabama. We did it a few years back in August, some nice courses that LPGA and the Sr. Tour still play. Stopped in NOLA on the way over, then we stayed outside Montgomery for the week and all courses were within an hour drive. Ross Bridge and The Judge were great tracks.

Yeah, if you are open to a full day's drive, I'd consider RTJ trail. But you are definitely going to sweat and dehydrate your balls off if you plan to play 144 holes of golf in 4 days in Alabama in July.

Why drive. Find cheap flights to denver and head to summit county. Lots of great courses in the area.

Last summer we did a Denver trip after many hot summer trips. Best decision we've ever made.

Head to the mountains in Colorado. Long drive and expensive golf but the weather will be fantastic.

RTJ was my first thought too, and it's a great option for affordable golf. But if you want to get out of the heat it's not much further a drive from San Antonio to Summit County (1,000 miles) than it is to Montgomery, AL (830 miles). Either one is a solid full day of driving. Or, look into New Mexico; might be shorter than either of those drives if you can find a place with good golf options.

Edit: 700 miles from SA to here, not bad for $100 a loop: http://www.paakoridge.com/

My group did the Audubon Golf Trail a couple of years ago. Great trip, we stayed in downtown Baton Rouge, played Carter Plantation, Tthe Bluffs, Santa Maria, the Island, then Achafalaya, & Gray Plantation on way home. All good courses. Great food & live jazz in BR.

I second the recommendation for HSV. You can rent a cheap house on a lake, but it will still be pretty hot. Courses there are very nice and pretty cheap. We're going back in August this year.

Fly in to DEN or COS or ABQ.

Colorado Summit County (Vail/Keystone/Breck/Copper/etc) .... you're probably familiar.
- Summit County is just stupid expensive these days .... fair warning.

I live in Colorado Springs. COS is at 6,200' above sea level. It's never hot here and virtually 0 humidity.
Couple suggestions to eat/play/stay/dine:

Here are some ABQ area options:

Who do you book through? We're looking to go on a guy's trip late this summer and this looks good.

Or you could get them on that sweet club you just joined a few months ago for 4 days.

Ruidoso, New Mexico. Temperatures are usually in the upper 70's to mid 80's during the day and mid 50's overnight. Good courses in the area as well as the Indian Casino.

We just use AirBNB or VRBO. Mostly its just individual people renting their houses out, but there are good deals for the house you can get. We just booked tee times a week in advance of the trip with the individual course. There are several courses and only one is private, I believe.

Lot's of good golf in the midwest as well. Lived a few years in Ohio and could not believe the quality of the golf and the affordability of the courses.

Hot springs has some great courses. Parents built house on one of the courses and played a lot early on that said it will be really hot and night life sucks in that area for a guys trip. I would suggest that trip in October for pure golf or maybe in march and go to the races

If you go to HSV

diamonte is semi private
Isabella is 27 holes great for a nine hole match play day
Granada is beautiful
I personally like Magellan course but other three are probably better

Diamante in HSV used to be my home course...imo
the best course in HSV.

Grenada, Isabella, and Magellan were the newer courses in the East Side of HSV. I like Magellan but buddies didnt. I would throw in Balboa and Ponce, older but fun. Absolutely love Cortez... but not DeSoto.

HSV in July is HOT and HUMID.

If you want a cooler weather golf, you may want to consider Bend Oregon. Fly into Portland.

Really hard to beat Bend, but it's not a drive from San Antonio. I'm headed there in a couple weeks.

Druggist, are you located in Bend? My wife and I are considering a relocation there within the next year and would love to pick your brain sometime.

Joe,

No I don't live there but visited every September and some other months for the past 16 years. It's a 3 to 4 hour drive from where I live in Northern Cal.

That being said, some of my friends own 2nd homes there but no one I know live there full time.

I assume you have visited during the winter?

For me, I will say Bend is too cold and wet from end of September to late May...

It is absolutely glorious in July and August. Warm dry days and chilly morning and night. What questions do you have? I can ask my buddies. I will be in Coos Bay/Bandon during 4th of July...and no we are not playing Dunes... but will play Bandon Crossing.

I've never been in Winter to Bend. My wife's sister lived in Corvallis, so we'd usually make a trip to Bend when going to visit. We only went in the spring and summer though, which, is probably their best time.

We are thinking about taking a ski trip there this winter to check it out at that time.

Mainly wanted to know more information on jobs, schools, areas to live, etc. I know it is one of the fastest growing cities in the country (#6 according the US Census Bureau), which bodes well for me for jobs as a civil engineer.

Definitely travel there in the Winter to see if you can tolerate 6 months of cold weather.

One thing that would bother me about Bend is that it's not near a major airport and they lack a major comprehensive healthcare provider. St. Charles is a level II trauma center. ... not sure of their other services.

And I tend to think Oregon inflates their employment stats... you cant pump your own gas.

My first few years of visiting Bend, I absolutely loved it. It's beautiful, has a wonderful little downtown.. good overall amenities... I could live there 2 months out of the year.

Lt Joe - I work from home, but my boss lives in Redmond, so I get there once every couple months. I don't know if I've been lucky, but the weather there in the winter is better than here in Tacoma - colder, but drier. Snow, instead of drizzle. And I'd expand the really nice time: April to October easy and November isn't bad.

He's tried to get me down there, but I travel a bunch and that airport is tiny.

Golf is fantastic and skiing is really good in winter.

And yes, tons of second homes for Californians - my boss' neighborhood is probably only 25% year-round occupants.

Yeah. Seems like they need to upgrade that airport in a bad way. Having to drive up to Portland would be a beating.

25% year round occupants? That seems insane.

I'm also a pretty big bird hunter with a hunting dog. Would love to live in the area for the hunting opportunities. And it would make the winters more tolerable with something to do.

I should be more clear. HIS neighborhood is mostly second homes, but these are 5000 square foot Tuscan-styled places where some rich dude flys in from SFO to hunt or ski. Redmond proper isn't like that. As to the airport, it is what it is. A regional airport. It's actually pretty nice and they have plenty of flights to SEA and Portland (plus Minneapolis, Chicago and Dallas I believe). I've never seen it crowded, security is simple.

And Rick hunts year round. Outdoors is why you live in Oregon.

Does Rick know any civil engineers that are hiring?

In all seriousness, yeah, we fell in love with Oregon after visiting my wife's sister so often. Western Oregon would still be awesome to live in, but Eastern Oregon just seems perfect.
