You're right. It's usually fear when a team creates a silly excuse not to play. UNC is not afraid but Texas sure is.

They didn't even want to play USF, let alone UNC.

With their soft home schedule, they need a feature OOC opponent to sell tickets. That region is already badly overrecruited and one game would not help.
Mack sounds bitter that they demanded excellence and pressured him to win. He would have nothing to lose. Can see why they declined.
