Another hit to the possibility of a Friday night game on FOX is the start of WWE Smackdown in 2019. Assuming FOX is hooked to airing Smackdown only on the broadcast network, that would leave FS1 as your broadcast outlet, which might have been less palatable to the conference.
Quote:

Without parroting everything from the First Look podcast linked in the first paragraph, FOX sought to have their payout decreased, maybe in exchange for guaranteeing the early afternoon slot on the broadcast network or for the game to air on FS1 at night (I know neither of these things to be factual, so take those with a grain of salt). It sounds like the minimum the Big 12 would take for a rights fee was still too much for FOX to pay.

What's FOX going to air that Saturday?

College basketball seems likely
In short...no one wants your dumbass "Championship Game" that's really a 1st vs. 2nd place game, and they would rather air Pro Wrestling or College Basketball instead.

Yes Sir,

I can see it now, sips, tee shirt sips and land thieves crying about having to log into FB for a rematch football game.

Ratings will be huge, long live the Longwhorn Network.

Thank you President Loftin for getting us out of that poop pile.

Edit: forgot to add tee shirt sips. BTW, my yard guy has a sip sweat shirt on today.

Guys, it's all going to DeLoss' plan. Now the BDF game will HAVE to go to the Long***** network, where little brother will jump another $50 million ahead of "poor ol ****" in revenue.

If you are a sip what is the best way to deflect this embarrassment?

Claiming a national conspiracy to keep Texas down might be their best option.

SEC Network buys the rights to the big dumpster fire title games.

  • Send only interns to do every job including on air commentary
  • Send just a couple of old cameras, no HD
  • Explain that the SEC network is using the event to train its young talent in a low pressure environment because they are not ready yet for the big time of something like the SEC
  • In order to advertise the game the Big 12 would have to advertise for the SEC Network

So, with this money now in jeopardy plus Baylor getting its full share again - payouts are on the up and up for the Big 12, right?

Perhaps they could save on production costs by letting Dave Lapham call Smackdown and the dumpster fire championship game.

I'd like to see Jim Ross but he's a huge OU homer and couldn't be objective when they beat whoever is 2nd.

Strange the usual suspects haven't commented on this. It's a REALLY good sign of what people think of the level of play in your league when one of your primary media partners doesn't want to go head up against the ACC Championship Game, which commonly has terrible attendance and is a basketball conference.

Yeah...it's a big conspiracy that the media "props up" the SEC, as do all the fans' television sets across the country. It has NOTHING to do with wanting to watch teams with the most talent.

It's strange. The Big 12 championship game was the 2nd most watched championship game and the 4th most watched game of the year.

Fox has scheduling issues that will likely push the game to FS1. The ratings will take a hit if that's the case.

This year was an anomaly. Wait until you get that Iowa State/TCU matchup down the road.

Wow. It seems State high school football playoffs are more popular than the bdf championship game.

High viewership is good but advertisers also want to know who is watching. The average big 12 viewer may not be the audience large advertisers want to reach. And therefore they won't pay fox as much per viewer.

The dollar general advertising budget is not as high as you would think.

It was really a perfect storm to allow for it to be:

  • Playoff implications. OU loses, possibility of Georgia making it in even if they lose the SEC CG
  • Close Heisman Trophy race where the CCG could be the deciding factor (looks like it was)
  • Redemption - Texas handed OU their only loss this season. Could OU get revenge
  • Rivalry - see above
  • ACC Championship was pretty much decided given the level Clemson was playing and their opponent
  • B1G Championship didn't have any real meaning. After getting slapped around by Purdue, OSU wasn't making it in and they were facing 9-3 Northwestern who plays in a weak division and lost to powerhouses Akron and Duke
  • Pac Championship game - If there's a conference that people care less about than the BDF, the Pac would be it

Probably because it was only the 2ns game of the year the sips had worth playing. Thus burnt ugly tuned in.

I'm sure the Big XII wouldn't care if it's FS1; but Fox isn't paying 20 million to put it on FS1 because it's not financially sound.

Has anyone here ever heard of any conference that doesn't have their ccg locked in long term? Hell, the SEC/CBS has always been locked in...who the hell is running the Big 12...Vince Young? I saw where FOX offered $18 million and the conference rejected it...sort of reminds me of the Big East turning down ESPN's offer just before they became the AAC. What are the chances ESPN even bothers to make a bid...seems maybe ESPN/FOX remember the Big 12 trying to force G5's when the conference was looking to expand and now they're playing their hands. All 10 members now lose $2M apiece and Amazon isn't coming to the rescue because FOX just told them Hell No. Proves that the BDF is a very appropriate moniker. Bowlsby & the Boobs!!!

What ATM2004 said. It was the perfect storm for the BDF and Fox didn't like the numbers. Plus they are hedging against the downside of having the likes of WVU and Iowa State in the bdf championship game.

No doubt the tv numbers of the pac12, big10, and ACC conference championship games worried FOX that the same or worse could happen in the BDF championship game this year. Thus the reason for the drop in the offer. Is the 18 million still on the table or has it dropped again. I haven't heard anything about any other network picking it up?
