Went to Bedlam this weekend in Norman. I had never been to Norman and not really sure what I was expecting, but I was surprised at how rundown OU and Norman is.

Campus was average and not much to look at. Ok State is far and away more beautiful and it's really not even close. OU's stadium itself felt small and is out of date, but then I think our perspective with Kyle Field being the mega structure it is skews my perspective. I will say their old school game presentation was pretty good. Their jumbotron is a perfect size for the stadium with good sound that is intelligible and not overwhelming.

The entertainment district next to campus is weak as hell and very rundown. Only two bars available so there were lines out the door to get in and O'Connells (their Chicken I guess) ran out of food and beer by halftime. We managed to find a spot at Pepe Delgados Mexican food. They don't have queso-wut?

Opposing fans were nice to one another and I didn't see a single scuffle or even a testy verbal exchange all day.

Took an hour to get out of Norman. We should appreciate our post game traffic because theirs is awful.

Also surprising and I assume a result of our entry to SEC was the diverse background of their starters. Few Texans now. They had players from all over the country including several from California.

All in all it was fairly unimpressive. Pretty sad college town I have to say.

But the surrounding countryside is so beautiful. All that red dirt and lack of trees. Trailer homes dot the horizon and the wind is constantly set to 20mph +.

Also was amused by the massive Winstar and the first building you see on that campus is a pawn shop.

My brother-in-law lives in Norman, and his wife lost a battle with cancer this summer. We've spent quite a bit of time there the last several months trying to help them and have gotten to know it fairly well. The OU campus is on the east side of the town, which is the older part. I agree with your comments about the campus and the neighborhoods around it. Not impressive at all. There's a lot of new development west and south, and I was surprised at how nice those areas are. Won't ever be my favorite town, but it's pretty decent as you get further west.

I envy the fact that they have a casino so close to campus, though. When I used to do work in OKC, I realized how close they were to the casino. Probably would've spent all of my scholarship/loan money there as an undergrad

Most OU and OSU fans are nice to each other because they all live near each other in Dallas.

You mean it almost seems as if they have been somebody's little conference b*tch?

One thing I did learn in the time we spent in the Big XII was how to get out of those dumps, quickly. In Norman, never park south of the stadium, where all the traffic feeds onto highway 9. Park west of the stadium in the residential neighborhood and use Boyd (?) to get back to the Interstate.

Wife is a sooner and actually from Norman so I've spent a lot of time in Norman. The old part of town is really run down and not looking like any sort of revitalization is coming in the foreseeable future.

The campus at least has generally coherent buildings and some parts that are nice to look at. That said, much of the buildings are dated and the neighborhood surrounding the campus has a 1960s middle class feel but it never got the facelift.

Believe it or not, campus corner is much better than it used to be. There are actually some places to get food and people selling beers in the street. Still, though, just ok.

Their tailgating scene is nothing compared to College Station. In fact, the first time I went about 10 years ago, I recall seeing only a handful of tailgates total. Was really weird. There are more now, but nothing close to what you see in College Station.

The farther you get from campus, the more decent it looks?

The sooners missed a golden opportunity to take that final Spot and join us in going to the SEC. they just couldn't get that horn finger out of their ass fast enough to make that decision, but Missouri Didn't stutter when the opportunity presented itself.

Meanwhile college station is growing by leaps and bounds since joining the SEC!

Word at the time was that OU couldn't go anywhere unless OSU gets to go too.

No, it's actually very beautiful. Buildings that have gorgeous architecture and an actual plan to keep the entire campus looking like it goes together, unlike A&M who have some gorgeous buildings, then the planet of the apes buildings from the late 60s, 70s, and 80s and now all the throw back late 50s, early 60s look they've adopted in recent years. Love A&M but we have a ****ed up campus.

Agreed. OSU campus is prettier than ours. Really not even a debate; not that I care at the end of the day.

I was just really surprised at how much of a dump OU is compared to their in-state rival and frankly period. Athletics is really all they have going for them.

This is where you and I disagree. I live 12 miles from Kyle and it took 1:15 for me to get home after the Clemson game.

I've been to every Big XII and SEC West school, South Carolina and Florida. Traffic at A&M is much better than any other big time football venue that I've been to.

As a native Oklahoman who has been on the campuses mentioned herein numerous times I am puzzled by the criticism of the OU campus. Its "Cherokee Gothic" architectural theme has been religiously adhered to as each new building mirrors the original architecture throughout the campus. The landscaping is beautiful. Even the football stadium matches the rest of the campus. The fraternity and sorority houses are massive and incredibly beautiful. UT and A&M look like the Houston med center ...a hodgepodge of buildings with no apparent theme. Yes, the campus in Norman is in an older part of town but I'm not sure what that does to detract from the campus itself. I've been to numerous games in Norman when visiting fans have marveled at the campus, comparing it to iconic Big 10 campuses. Owen Field does have a more intimate feel to it than Kyle Field. The record game day attendance is over 88k which is smaller than A&M but it's a great venue in which to watch a game. This thread is another example of the paranoia rampant among Aggies. You spend all your time criticizing rivals instead of bragging about your own accomplishments. Oh, I keep forgetting, your "accomplishments" are few and far between and at best forgettable

Oklahoma has a rich history of cheating, scandal, and drug abuse under Switzer and more recently a history of success within the BDF echo chamber. When it steps outside of league play, it's routinely crushed by teams that play defense and win the line of scrimmage. Dude, a hollow big 12 championship means very little to the rest of the CFB world, but congrats anyway.

Wilkinson was busted for having a slush fund to pay players. The joke in the '50s was if you left OU for the NFL you took a serious pay cut. And then there are all sorts of other payment schemes (Big Red Sports and Imports) and cultural issues (Mixon, et al.).

OU fans don't have some ivory tower to stand on, at least.

Paranoia would be posting on the board of a non-rival you no longer play, all because like most toothless OU fans you're ate up with SEC ***** envy.

That sounds like a line John Goodman or Steve Buscemi delivers in a Cohen Brothers film.

Almost as bad as calling High Life the "champagne of beers."

I've visited OU's campus 3-4 times (granted it's been 10 or so years ago now), but I always found it to be relatively nice. Also, there is plenty to do in Oklahoma City if Norman isn't your cup of tea.

The problem with Stillwater is that it's so isolated and backwater. One of my least favorite Big XII road trips, along with Ames.

I went last year for their homecoming and I agree with this. Eskimo Joes was balls crowded and there were a few hole in the wall bars that we're alright, but around campus it's mostly shops and restaurants. That said, those floats that the sororities and frats do for homecoming are pretty f'ing cool. I saw some very creative ones.

The entire state of Oklahoma outside of a few places in Oklahoma City is a sh-thole and that includes everything in Norman. Whenever I go to Oklahoma, I feel like I've traveled into time back to the 70s. Sorry that the truth bothers you.
