If you're like most cfb fans, you're sick of reading articles about overhyped players.
So meet Joel Lanning.
Iowa State linebacker Joel Lanning isn't very well known. Lanning wasn't a highly publicized five-star linebacker recruit. His name probably isn't on the Butkus Award watch list.
The Sporting News didn't name him the Big12's preseason defensive POY. Clueless sportswriters at ESPN and the AAS haven't written dozens of articles gushing about what a great defensive leader he is.
Lanning last played defense in the 8th grade. He was Iowa State's starting qb this time last year.
But at 6'2 230, Lanning isn't afraid of contact. In fact he actually likes to meet running backs straight up in the hole and knock them flat. Which happens to be a trait some of the Big12's most hyped linebackers don't have.
So the ISU coaches decided to move Lanning to linebacker. Thus far, it's working out pretty good.
Lanning is the first to admit he is still learning the linebacker position. He's still learning his reads and responsibilities and where to run to.
Yet in 2017 he has made 26 tackles in his first three starts (along with 4 tfl's, too). That is not too shabby at all. If he keeps it up, Lanning will end up exceeding the 100 total tackles mark in his first season as a college linebacker.
The Big12's Murderers Row: Kansas, Iowa State, and Baylor. Danger, Will Robinson! Look out, little brother sips.
