But in all seriousness, this is why demo day is no joke and should only be attempted by those with the physical attributes and strength to conduct it safely. Herman shouldn't be ashamed of his limitations. When you can't compete, just step aside.

Commercial installations like that are often built in using hardwood. For something like that it's sometimes easier to just plane thick stock than to fit multiple pieces. He left a hole though, so it might be just cheap *** MDF with laminate on top. Real wood would have a less uniform hole because the fibers run one way, and 3/4" to 1" hardwood is not something I'd want to hit with a sledge.
