Dallas Morning NewsA second former Baylor football player has been arrested in connection with the 2013 sexual assault of a female student who says two players accompanied her home after she got drunk at a party and gang-raped her.
Shamycheal "Myke" Chatman, 23, was taken into custody by Houston-area U.S. marshals on Thursday, the day after his former teammate Tre'Von Armstead was arrested. It was not immediately clear where he was being held or whether his charges match Armstead's.
Armstead was indicted last week on three counts of sexual assault, a second-degree felony that is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
The two had previously been named as suspects in a police report related to the incident but had not been charged until this week. Authorities took action based on "newly discovered evidence and continued investigation," McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna said.
They became the latest former Baylor football players to face sexual assault charges, as the school continues to struggle with an ongoing sexual assault scandal.
At least 19 football players have been accused of sexual or physical assault, including four gang rapes, since 2011, the school has said. A lawsuit filed by the woman who accuses Chatman and Armstead alleges that number may be far higher, with at least 31 players committing as many as 52 "acts of rape" between 2011 and 2014.
Chatman and Armstead are accused of sexually assaulting the woman on April 18, 2013. The woman, who has not been identified, was a member of the Baylor Bruins, a group of mostly female students that hosts football recruits on campus visits. She attended a party at a football player's apartment and became intoxicated, according to the lawsuit she filed against Baylor.
Later, her roommate's boyfriend saw Chatman and Armstead emerge from her room after hearing "what sounded like wrestling and a fist hitting someone" and a woman saying "no." She had a bruise on her cheek and a bite mark on her neck, the suit said.She initially told police that she had not been sexually assaulted but later decided to file a report because she woke up with bruises and a physical feeling that indicated she had had sex, even though she did not remember.
She told police at the time that she did not want to press charges.
She later filed the lawsuit, which alleged that Chatman had previously raped a female student athletic trainer. Baylor agreed to pay for the woman's education in exchange for a nondisclosure agreement and reassigned her to a female sports team, the suit said.
In the April 18, 2013, case, Chatman told police that the sex was consensual. He later transferred to Sam Houston State University.
Armstead was dismissed from the football team for an unspecified violation of team rules in 2015. The next year, ESPN reported he was expelled after Baylor found him responsible for sexually assaulting the woman.
On Thursday, Armstead was being held at the Jefferson County Jail in southeast Texas on $150,000 bail.
The arrests are the latest in an onslaught of news that has kept Baylor's sexual assault crisis in the headlines. Also this week, another former Baylor football player had his sexual assault conviction overturned.
An appeals court granted Sam Ukwuachu a new trial on the grounds that some text messages were improperly excluded from evidence during his trial.
Prosecutors have vowed to appeal.
