That is the interesting thing about the if colt didn't get hurt narrative. After that game, Mack started churning coordinators and schemes trying to bring in whatever they lost to the year before. After that they never quite had the personnel needed for the scheme they were trying. Oddly, Charlie did the same thing, trying to instill a pass heavy O without changing OC, and relying on a QB that didn't have the arm.aggiehawg said:Go back a few more years. Mack hired Muschamp as HCIW. A seamless transition was in the works. Then, they lost to Alabama in the title game. That wasn't in the script. Mack changed his mind and balked at retiring. Dodds and Powers backed him. Muschamp sees the handwriting on the wall and splits.BiochemAg97 said:it was time for Mack to hang it up and move on. But they totally mishandled the situation. Rather than honoring Mack for what he had done for them, they tossed him on his rear and used him as a scapegoat for all the problems Strong had.McInnis80 said:
Of course they still won't admit they made a mistake in firing a coach who won the crystal football and was a runner up.
Mack was obviously not ready to go, and from accounts he was told he would be staying. He would have passed DKRs win record the next year and they could have sent him off on a high note and turned him into some celebrated host of the LHN.
But no, they had to be all dilusional in thinking they could hire Saban away from Bama. Now they can't even hire a position coach from FSU that Bama has for the taking.
Over the next few years, Dodds and Powers' support erodes as they battle to keep their jobs and Mack loses his protection. Dodds steps down in order to let Mack stay for awhile longer, but it's too little, too late. Powers doesn't have the BOR support to keep Mack on.
Oliver Luck interviews for the AD spot. His pitch to the hiring committee? He wants Mack fired before he gets there, beer sales at DKR and expansion of the Big XII at least back to 12, if not to 14 teams to keep the Big XII competitive. That was not what certain people (Dodds and Powers) wanted to hear and they manage to steer the hiring from Luck to the ever affable (if incompetent) Patterson.
Chaos ensues.
Not sure Muschamp would have worked out, given what happened at Florida.
