I actually think a school districts information is a wealth of data. It tends to be pretty accurate since they work so closely with the City. Where are you looking?

School districts
Bisnow
Land owners
There is some architect forum that is normally pretty insightful online

Certain Municipalities make it really easy to pull recent permits and some even have interactive development maps online with their whole permitting system overlayed.

College Station posts their development permits monthly so I typically check in on those in case I missed something moving in the market.
