Hey all. We just closed on our first home!

We're excited and nervous too! We move in a few days from now. Just rounding out my to-do list. I've read several articles on things to do right after you move in.

What are your suggestions?

Well with your poster name I would make sure all of your cameras and video are live. If you don't have any, get some ASAP.

Some people like to christen every room with their so. I like to change locks. But make sure you put the key to them on your keychain immediately, so your next task isn't fixing a broken window from breaking into your own home (never making that mistake again- keypad locks now)

If you got a home warranty, alot of them will actually do this as a covered service.......
A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.

In regards to turning on utilities, hope you have all these scheduled in advance. There can be a charge to last minute scheduling turning on electricity to your name. Also, it may take some time to get the Internet/Cable scheduled. I'd hate for your wife to be without HGTV when she's setting up a brand new house.

Do any planned flooring or painting tasks first.

Clean out the dryer vents before you put your machines in

It's still cool so get in the attic and blow out/clean out the drip pan overflows for the AC and water heaters.

Go meet your neighbors! Throw a party so you can get to know them.

I can tell you what NOT to do. Don't tear the thing apart thinking you'll have plenty of time to get it renovated before your future wife moves in. Life gets in the way and 5 years later, you still won't be done and your now wife will want to murder you...Hypothetically.

Stop calling it a "home" now that you've closed and are done dealing with realtors and their dumb terminology for a while. It's a "house" or "a box to sleep in so you don't get rained on."

See you back on the HI board in six months when you have a leak under the slab or a retaining wall collapse.

Don't consolidate credit card debt in to the home loan at some later point in time.
