At some point someone got smart and started selling in MMBTUs.PA24 said:
In 1983, gas was selling for $2.25/thousand ft^3 I know this cause I was a producer.
Over the years I've worked in Oil and Gas Accounting, consulting and then have owned an IT Company that specializes in Oil and Gas Accounting etc.
I remember when I worked for a smallish Oil and Gas company and found an old letter from the 1950s
( wish I had taken a pic of it, but that was in the 90s and long before smart phones) and the person was pontificating and asking if it would make sense to measure BTU value in measuring natural gas production and sales.
Before then gas was sold in MCFs, now MMBTUs
