I ran out of checks last night so I went online with Harland-Clarke and placed an order.

They had all my data already, and the last order I had placed was January 2016, almost 4 years ago.

I think I write fewer than 5 checks/month. Some months it is probably only one, and that is because I was too lazy to set up my vehicle loan for electronic funds transfer.

A refill of 80 checks was about $17 (a little more than $0.25/check). Harland-Clarke tried the old trick where their default shipping method would cost me about $15. I defaulted to the free shipping and can wait the estimated two weeks for delivery.

Thirty years ago I would not have envisioned checks to be damn near obsolete.

Yep.. I got my order from Costco last week ( Harland prints them ) and I will die before I use them all. I buy hay and pay the feds with checks. So that is maybe 10 checks a year.

About half the checks I write are every January to the people who do my NFL pool but don't have PayPal. Much of the other half are field trip / camp fees for my kids.

Who'd have thought?

I think the only checks I've written in the past 3 years or so were to either the lawn care company I used to use or my kids' school.

Haven't written a check in approx 10 years. Did have to get a usps money order once though.

Both of my banks give me free checks

The only time I write a check is to buy a vehicle

Same here...the only checks I write are to my yard guy (can't convince him to use Zelle), my kid's school, and to pay my property taxes. I refuse to pay the cc fees to pay my taxes by credit card.

I can remember writing checks for "cash" in college because I didn't have an ATM card. And it wasn't ~that~ long ago!

Vistaprint or Walmart. Walmart's are pretty inexpensive.

Our credit union (through my wife's work) just prints us more checks if we need them at the desk/branch at HQ

At my bank you can ask for "counter-checks". They'll print off three to a sheet for me for free.

The only checks I write are to Olga the cleaning lady, and to my kids' tennis coach who for some reason wants "Cash" to be on it rather than "Carl"

i have to write checks for my hunting lease because the old guys in charge just cannot seem to understand the myriad of payment options that would see them collect their money instantly rather than waiting for people to mail checks around.

Color me one of those old guys. Actually, I do understand other payment options but still prefer a paper check.

Rest assured, though, we're dying out and won't be around to torment folks much longer. ;-)

Funny story -- I asked a 20-ish guy the other day to bring me a check for about $5K. Yes, he had a check and brought it, but asked me to explain to him how the line below the 'payee' was to be filled out.

That surprised me. Times change, I know.

The only checks I use these days are for massages and porn. I do NOT want them getting my credit card information!

One of the rare non-hyperbole scenarios where I can say: "People still do this?!"

Your bank can send a check for you for those local vendors who love 1989, so why write one?

$17 for 80?? Jesus, that seems excessive for obsolete technology.

My bank has given me free checks for 20 years.

The last time I got a box was almost 10 years ago. Not because I ran out, but because wife and I got married so we ordered some with her correct name on them. I still have some with just my name on it.

The checks don't come from the bank. They come from a third party printer. My bank (credit union) policy is that if you want checks, go get them yourself.

I've had the same check book for 14 years. It's a decent bet that I'll die before I run out of checks.

Church offering
Kind's church camps, fees
PTA memberships and school
Housekeeper
Yard Crew

Probably still write about 3 a month, total.

I know how it works. I get my checks from harland-clarke as well. But my bank pays for checks.. I'm using their bank, why would they make me pay for a method of using my money? The banking industry is too competitive to charge people piddly fees for everything like 25 years ago.

Kinda like how I don't pay atm fees anywhere.

Now, it is just the basic checks they pay for.. If you want some fancy cat checks, that'll cost ya.

I'm pretty sure it's legal to just print your own... As long as the account and routing number are correct it can be processed. Even hand writing the numbers on a blank sheet of paper is legally allowed to be cashed, but most banks would probably balk at that.

I am treasurer for my son's Cub Scout pack.

When I took the job I went through the old check register and bank statements and loaded all of it I to Quicken. I noticed there was a stale check about 6 months old that had been a refund to a family that left the pack. I was about to cancel it out of the register when it cleared at the bank about 360 days after it was written.

We had some other parents drag their feet turning in fundraiser money last year. They handed it all over to me. It included a check that was over 6 months old. I warned them it might not clear. I took it to our bank teller and asked if they would accept it for deposit. The teller's response was "Let's just try to run it and see." In the back of my mind I am thinking, "It is easy for her to say that, but we're the ones that will get screwed with the fees if it gets returned."

I've done my best to quit writing checks, but still have to write around 5 each month. The city I live in, which provides my water and sewer, does not have an electronic payment option. Any vendors at my house that charge more than ~$150 get paid by check unless they can take a credit card. Some months that's zero and some months it's 4 or 5. Other random things like tax payments, kids' tuition, vehicle purchases, we use checks for.

I'm jealous of those of you who haven't written a check in months.

But my bank is writing and sending it for me.

I hope this thread makes it to someone at Aggieland CU / GTFCU.

They still make members pay for checks.
