We will be in CR for several days in February. We ended up with an extra day in San Jose. Any good ideas for a day trip out of SJ?

I'm assuming you will be at the beach for the rest of your trip so maybe Sarchi or Heredia to do something a little different.

Not gonna disagree with the other mentions, but I would also add:

Poas Volcano National Park just a little to the north of there.

Not sure if you have a car, but if so Playa Hermosa just south of Jaco is a great beach trip. It is probably a two hour drive, but it is not a difficult (mountainous) drive. Around that area, there are hikes, ziplines, waterfalls, crocodiles, nightlife in Jaco and the beach. I would not recommend Jaco for the beach as it tends to be more populated and littered with trash.

Paraiso - Hacienda Orosi hot springs
Both can be done in a 1 day trip from SJ

Anfiteatro de Villa is an art cavern SW of SJ. Its pretty neat for something off the beaten path
