Has anyone been to Rome recently?

I am thinking about taking my family this thanksgiving.

I have been twice.

Is it safe these days?

Three kids ages 15 to 10

Is it safe as it was 10 years ago?

Too much unpredictability. They might shut off tourism to the EU over the winter. Who knows wtf is about to happen. We got to face the contingency that regular tourism to the EU this winter might not happen.

What are you talking about??? Why would Rome not be safe? When has Rome ever not been safe? Not sure what media you are listening to, but Rome / Italy is one of the safest places on the planet. There is no indication Italy will shut down its borders due to Covid as it's wide open right now. Just go and have a great time.

Thanksgiving is a perfect time to go. Cool to maybe cold with not many crowds particularly with the absence of mainland Chinese which I think is still doing travel bans.

No reason to think it won't be safe and open this winter.

If you go, be sure to check out Walks of Italy. https://www.walksofitaly.com/

I'm sitting in JFK right now, starting my trip in Milan and ending up in Venice. Will be in Rome Thursday. I have no fears about Italy other than the Gypsy pick-pocket thief's.

Trip is booked for the week of Thanksgiving

My wife and I went to Rome before we had kids and I went again back in 2012

We are Catholic and this will be a Catholic centered trip.

I have been telling the family that I would take them after my youngest did his first communion, but COVID happened and we had some other medical issues come up

We just got word Friday that my oldest doesn't have to have surgery over Thanksgiving so here we go

I go to Rome every couple of years and have never felt unsafe. I walk around all hours of the night without a problem. Have a great trip!

My family of 5 visited Rome over Thanksgiving before the COVID pandemic started. Kids were 10, 13, and 16. It was a great time to visit. It is outside of tourist season so we didn't really have to deal with any lines. Weather was mostly in the 60's. You run a chance of rain, but we lucked out and it only rained 1 time for about an hour during the entire week we were there. Enjoy!

We stayed in an AirBnB in Piazza Mazzini, which was about a 15 minute walk from the Vatican and very close to a subway entrance. It was 3 bed, 2 bath with full kitchen, living, and dining areas. It was significantly cheaper than a hotel. It was also great because it's not in a touristly area so we were able to experience typical life in a Roman neighborhood...step outside in the morning to grab something from a fruit/vegetable stand, go across the street to a coffee shop....all at "normal" prices.

We're on day 2 of Rome. Yesterday we took a 7 hr private walking tour that ended up being almost 9. It was incredible. We took the Metro with no issues, taxis are a breeze. Lots of people, but I feel safer here than LA or NYC. When I get back I'll post my tour info, well worth the money. Our guide was the best. Our hotel 9Cesare was about 5 min walk from the Pantheon and The Trivi fountain!

My family of four (2 young kids) was just there for 2 days this summer.

Your weather will be better than ours was.

It was absolutely safe and awesome… especially if you love history.

It's pretty crowded most of the time so start early in the mornings if you're trying to see historical sites.

We loved it (though we were a bit short on time) and would definitely go back.

Get yourself an Amazon Firestick and hook it up to the t.v. in your hotel/Airbnb. I never travel without mine.

When you go to the Colosseum, just walk past the long line (maybe not over Thanksgiving) and up the hill to the Titus Arch. At the Arch is a ticket booth for the Roman Forum and Colosseum. It's the same ticket you get at the Colosseum, only there is no line.

Wife and I did this when we were there one summer. There was at least 200 people in line at the Colosseum and 2 people in line past the Titus Arch. I think it was in the Rick Steve's Italy travel book.

The deli in the Metro station across the street was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life....completely random that we stopped there but we were hungry and nothing else was close bye.

Rome was pretty awesome as usual. I went 10 years ago and 15 years ago. Not much has changed besides a lot of museums and churches have metal detectors now. I think last time I went they were only as St Peters and I think Vatican museum. They have them at the Coleseum, Forum, and several Basilicas we visited.

Crowds were pretty light until Friday after Thanksgiving, it seemed like town was flooded with cruise passengers all of a sudden, but not sure.

I don't remember the African hawkers being as bad in Rome as they are now. I remember them being bad in Venice 15 years ago, but they are trying to sell purses and bracelets in Rome and some are very pushy.

We flew KLM from IAH-AMS-FCO. KLM lost my daughters bag on Sunday and we did not get it delivered to the room until Tuesday night. I think it got left in AMS with a few other passengers bags..

KLM changed our flights from IAH-AMS-FCO and AMS to IAH by moving them back about 6 hours. This resulted in us getting to Rome a half day later and having to layover in AMS for 7 hours on the way back. I would not have booked the flights they way they ended up being scheduled but I had no control over the last minute change.

I had never been to Castel St Angelo and we visited it this trip. There are pretty amazing views from the top overlooking the Vatican and Rome.

We were in the Vatican museum during a papal audience and it was almost empty which was nice. I have been crammed in there with thousands of Chinese tourists in the past

We attended a mass in Latin at St Peters

We rode the high speed train (freccirossa) from Rome to Naples and then a regular train to Pompeii. We bought our tickets to the Pompeii at the train station. Not sure if it was a good deal, but we paid $20 per adult and kids were free.

Pompeii was neat and my daughters wanted to see it because they are taking Latin and learned about it. We spent probably 3 hours at the site and saw pretty much all of it.

Back in Naples we took a cab to the archeological museum. It houses a lot of the artifacts from Pompeii.

Naples is a dump and while I wanted to explore it some, my wife and kids were content to cab it back to the train station. We ate pizza at a restaurant in the train station. I'll post a picture below.

We had planned to picnic in Borgese Gardens on Tuesday but it was raining, so didn't get to do that.

We stayed at Hotel Pantheon in Rome. I had seen it recommended on texags several times. It was an awesome location. The only downside is I felt like uber drivers had to charge more because it is not on a main street and they had to wind down the one way streets to get there. There are not any cabs nearby unless you catch one dropping someone off.. I had previously stayed near the Spanish Steps and prefer the more central hotel pantheon location.

We also visited the capitoline museum at the forum. Meh

We visited the following churches:

St. Clement Basilica
Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli
Church of Saints Marcellinus and Peter 'al Laterano'
Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri
Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore
Capuchin Crypt aka bone church
