We've scheduled a last minute trip to Vegas - had nothing booked all summer due to COVID and it seems like the most open/least expensive place for a getaway. We're taking our teenage sons for the first time, and staying at Caesar's. We figure they can spend a whole day just exploring the place.

Does anyone know if I should make reservations for one of the pools? I don't know if you can walk up and get a spot or if everything is full with reservations.

Yeah, man. For sure get some pool reservations.

No question.

Probably on a couple different days.

You probably already know this.

Kids can walk through Casinos if they're guests. They just can't stop or sit at any of the machines.

Check out the aquarium at Mandalay Bay and maybe make a trip out to Hoover Dam.

When my kids were in the 7-12 range, we had great fun driving go-karts.

Good Luck.

Mob museum is good. High roller Ferris wheel at night. Cirque shows. Temporary casino exhibits. Helicopter tour of Grand Canyon. Valley of Fire and hiking.

The weed smell and vagrancy is bad in Vegas now though. Sad to see it all over the sidewalks.

Day trip to Death Valley or Zion is another option.

while possible, those are both pretty long roundtrips for one day. You'd want to leave early and expect to be back late.

Re: Zion. It's also very very packed right now. Shuttle lines are two hours long. I love Zion. But that's one to wait on. And Death Valley is hot right now. Like Death Valley hot!

Only times I've ever been to Death Valley is mid-july, so I only know it as HOT. But I was there to pace/crew for the Badwater 135, so the whole point is for it to be hot.

if you just want to drive down the basin and take some pictures down there and then drive around, its fine. But yeah, if you are driving all that way out and all the way back, likely the last thing you want to do is drive around badwater even more. You won't want to be out of the car for extended periods of time or want to be doing any hiking at all.

Take them here and let them loose.

EDIT: Just to be clear, this is a serious recommendation. They'll love it.

New York NY casino has the roller coaster if still in operation. Also Valley of Fire state park is really good but hot during summer so if you go plan accordingly.

I recently did the Death Valley day trip and it was the best thing I did. Granted, it was just 110 at the bottom, and in the higher parts in the 90s.

But as far as the drive to and from, easy peasy.

NYNY is awful these days. I would avoid with kids.

Not trying to derail, but I've never understood the whole trying to make Vegas a family destination thing. It's definitely not a place for kids.

The smell of dank marijuana, stale hookers and sunscreen remind me of family every time.

Why wouldn't you want to bring kids to a place with a vibrant sex industry and people looking to sin in as many ways possible?

When I was there in May, it had been almost 10 years since my previous trip, and it seemed a lot less sex oriented. The cards on the streets were gone, the driving billboards for strip clubs were gone. There was one spot on the strip where, in the evening, scantily clad women (and men) came out and people were taking pics with them, but you could easily avoid that.

Smell of weed was striking. Other than that, really wasn't as bad as it used to be.

Still... I'd be cautious with kids.. I'd say over 16 only.
