Renting a home for a month - where do you go?

We're thinking of renting a place for a month next year and doing something where we work 2.5 - 3.5 days a week. then we keep our heads above water with work but still get to use a lot of PTO.

2 adults, 2 or 3 dogs. Probably April or October.

First thought is Key West. Great laid back town, ride bicycles for 95% of your daily travel, excellent food, some outdoor activities like fishing/kayaking, etc.

$10K housing budget max and must be reasonably drivable from TX. We aren't golfers nor big fishers but would be willing to drop a line.

No condos - we'd want the dogs to have a yard even if it is only big enough for bathroom breaks.

Where do you go?

Flagstaff, Arizona

Great weather (for either April or October).
Small town, but ample restaurants, breweries, and bars.
Surrounded by mountains, trees, rivers, lakes, Native American sites, and national monuments.
Plenty of hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, camping and all within a very reasonable distance.
Lots of day trip destinations (Grand Canyon, Sedona, Painted Desert) and lots of extended weekend destinations (Phoenix, Vegas, Albuquerque).
The different topographies and terrain in a 150 mile radius of downtown is simply unreal.

My first thought would be something beachy in Florida or South Carolina, or Colorado Springs.

This would be close to the top of my list as well. Love flagstaff.

It's funny, my wife and I talked about this exact thing this morning. Except more like two weeks in Flagstaff and a few weeks going up into Utah.

Funny story. My first job out of A&M was in southern California. I had a four-day weekend, so I made the trek to northern Arizona just to see what it was all about. About 3 months later, I quit that good-paying full-time job and headed right back to Flagstaff with nothing lined-up in terms of employment.

You've been warned. Flagstaff made quite the impact on me. It may very well do the same to you!

If you choose Florida, then I'd switch and rent during May instead of April. April is still considered high season in the Florida Keys and other beach destinations in SW Florida. October is another good off-season month, but you have to worry about hurricane season.

May is on the list too. we've been to KW in April (good) and July (miserable) for the heat/humidity.

May is likely cheaper as well. Rentals double in price from low>high season.

Will 3rd the Flagstaff suggestions. There are about ten National Parks within about a six hour drive, and even more National Monuments and state parks as well. Great weather at those times of year too. Potential downsides is that since Flagstaff is a college town, rents aren't going to be cheap.

Other towns to consider are Moab UT and Durango CO, if you like outdoor stuff like hiking/camping/mountain biking. I would also throw in Los Alamos NM too, but the NP's are not as close as Flagstaff. Lastly, I would also consider South Lake Tahoe, which sits on the CA/NV state line. Lots to do there. There's the lake obviously, but the mountains around the lake are incredible too. Go to the NV side of town and hit the casinos if you feel like it. Reno, Carson City, Virginia City are close by, and Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite aren't too far away.

I was going to offer Reno / Lake Tahoe
Flagstaff is nice too.

Sounds like fun. I'd thought about going to Sturgis / Rapid City, SD for a month.

I'm curious. Do you have a gig you can do from home, or is the plan to work just enough to cover the month of play time?

Not judging either way, if the latter and you're young and unencumbered, have fun!

We both have gigs we can do at home unless our companies change their minds, which they probably won't.

Along those same lines, I'd also suggest Blowing Rock / Boone, NC.

April or October? Maybe a house in the hill country where I'd be close to a bunch of state parks.
