We will be spending 2 weeks in Eagle County, CO at the end of August. We realized that we have no reason to come back anytime soon (WFH), so we were thinking of extending the trip somewhere in the Rockies or surrounding states.

So far I've taken a light peek at Montana, Wyoming, SW Colorado. Have young kids, so nothing aggressive.

Any specific recommendations in that area?

There have been a few threads here recently about driving up to the Teton/Yellowstone area...check those out for ideas if you consider heading north.

These are locations in Wheatland Wyoming area with the exception of the fly fishing outfitter. The Oregon trail and fort Laramie sites are all easy walks on improved trails.

The black mountain trail is moderate in difficulty but worth it. Pics attached. There are also a few Mount Rushmore pics included.

I would suggest Durango and Telluride in SW CO.

Trying to decide between the two of these.

Can do both, or just pick one for the week and venture around.

Which do people prefer as a home base for activities?

We rented a house on the mesa outside of ridgeway a few years ago and I really like that spot. Easy access to telluride and silverton, lots of state park/NF access close to town, good fishing, etc. I think black canyon is relatively close if you head the other way. Good base of operations spot in SW CO for what you are describing.
