My wife and I are looking for a long weekend getaway in August and looking for ideas. Initial thought was New Orleans, but like most of the country, it seems like too much is shut down to make it worth going there. As a back up plan, we considered Cabo and just doing an all-inclusive resort on the beach.

Anyone have any good ideas to go to mid-late August for a 3-4 day weekend where you can actually get out and enjoy your vacation? We planned on flying, ideally a shorter from Austin since it is a shorter trip.

Disclaimer - keeping politics out of it, but COVID is not a concern. We just want to be able to actually enjoy the area we are spending money to go to.

Fly to Reno, take the short drive over to the Ritz near Lake Tahoe. Great hotel, Truckee is a nice mountain town with some good restaurants. Weather is cooler. Great hiking. Great golf if you like. Not on the Lake but a short drive, and they have a private lake club on the lake.

Same situation. We almost did Cabo but last minute saw a special so the wife and I have about decided on La Cantera in San Antonio.

Anything specific y'all had planned yet that is open? We live in New Braunfels, and some variation of a staycation or San Antonio has been mentioned.

I am not familiar with that area at all, just heard how popular and beatific it is. Other than golf and hiking, what other activities would be open now?

We love food, but being able to get into nicer restaurants is part of the concern. Just not sure what will be available anywhere we go.

The hotel has a couple of restaurants, which are fine (Ritz restaurants are always good, though clearly some are better than others). If open, there were some good restaurants in Truckee. Truckee Tavern nice, higher-end place with good food. Good casual food at Bar Of America. There was also a wine bar downtown Uncorked, that was nice. We ate a a spot on Lake Tahoe that was good (Gar Woods) great views, ok food.
The activities are pretty much what you'd expect at a mountain town mostly outdoor. Ritz is right at he Nortstar ski area and the lift/gondola should be running. There are restaurants at Northstar as well.
He went over to the casino at the Hyatt small but nice. About a 30 minute drive. There's also a steakhouse at that hotel.
It's a very pretty, relaxing area. There are some great, non-strenuous hikes you can drive to within a few minutes that give you amazing views of the lake.

We were at La Cantera last week. Spent two days by the pool. Most restaurants in the area were empty (at least when we went). We ate at two that were good, one right by the resort, and another in town called Bliss. It was not a problem to get a same-day reservation at the latter.

I didn't visit this trip, but the spa at La Cantera is fantastic and worth a visit.

On the third day, we drove up to Fredericksburg and went to the Pacific War Museum, which was very good. Then we went to a winery. Some of them are open, but the tasting rooms are not. You have to buy a whole bottle of wine. We went to Augusta Vin, which also has light bites, and ordered a cheese tray to go with the wine. Only downside was it was really too hot to sit outside. The property is beautiful, though.

No plans as that's what we are attempting to do, just relax, hang by the pool, golf, spa, and hopefully enjoy a good restaurant.

Doing a 4.5 day weekend with 1 day/night in Nashville, 2 days/nights in Asheville, and the rest in the Smoky's.

Going to be busy but I can't wait.

We have done 2 stints in South Padre so far this summer and I really enjoyed both. The beach is really nice, water is blue-ish/greenish and not brown like Galveston. Not as clear as Mexico, but it is nice. They have good dining options. We did bay fishing and deep sea fishing (I hated the latter but that is because I got super sick). But we just enjoyed being out on the beach and not doing too much. I was hoping for Cabo but we decided to stay closer to home instead.

Thanks for all the responses. We ended up deciding on going to Sedona. Prices are pretty cheap for that area right now and we haven't been there before. Temperature should be highs in the nineties so it isn't as bad as Scottsdale.

Nashville: Broadway is open (except the bars with a big celebrity's name on the banner - which makes sense)... but they are limiting capacity inside bars/restaurants which then forces tons of people out on the sidewalks. They're also currently closing at 10. But that didn't stop the bachelorette parties from showing up in droves.

Gatlinburg was as expected...overrun with people and a tourist trap but I still always just have to spend a half day in that crazy town. 80:20 no masks:masks walking around outside, and then inside places people wear masks until they sit down, etc.

Smoky's were awesome. Beautiful weather, drives, great hikes...wildlife. Exactly what we wanted. Lots of families currently vacationing up there.

Asheville was pretty sleepy due to covid/NC laws and the downtown square area was doing their best but a lot of things were closed and current restrictions suffocated any true night life. Blue Ridge parkway, trails, Biltmore was all great but to fully experience Asheville culture, arts, nightlife...now is not the right time.

Overall a great trip. SW did fantastic like always...planes are cleaner than ever. Our flight attendant heading to Nasvhille pleaded with the cabin that if we enjoyed their service and clearly we are ok flying to please encourage everyone you know that it's safe and ok to travel again. You could feel the pain of the airlines in her plea.
