We're hoping to hit Glacier National Park in July and also Banff/Jasper.

In case we can't get into Canada/Banff would love some suggestions of other places to visit in Montana 4/5 days for hiking, scenery, etc.

Thanks!!!!!

I'd also recommend doing the Beartooth Highway from the Northeast Yellowstone entrance to Red Lodge (or do it going into Yellowstone).

Unbelievably beautiful up there. It's truly a stretch of road every American should drive before they die. In fact Charles Kuralt called it the most beautiful drive in America many years ago.

I recommend making a full loop starting in Whitefish, going south of the park on highway 2, then 49, then 89, and finally back through the park on Going-to-the-Sun road (or the same trip in reverse). It's all spectacular, and doing the full loop gets you some different kinds of landscape from a there-and-back on GttS road.

I decided years ago that if I'm going to go to a place only one time in my life, I hate to get there and find out that there was something awesome that I didn't do

So I go to the boards and get lots of ideas and combine that with Other research But I love to give back because most of the items on the itinerary are from this Travel board

This. Also, be prepared when driving that road. I drove it in late June 2004 and ran into a blizzard over the pass.

Other suggestions...

Whitefish is a cool town, just enjoy it.

If you're a railroad nerd, take a short (or long) trip on the Amtrak that runs on the old GN line through Glacier Park. If you're an uber railroad nerd, stop at the Isaac Walton Inn for a night in Essex.

Lots of cool stuff around Missoula. It's a college town up in the mountains that hasn't (at least last time I was there) lost its college town charm.

If you make a wrong turn and for whatever reason find yourself in Great Falls, drop into the Sip-n-Dip for a drink and a touch of throwback Americana.
