just randomly checked (Marriott) NY and Nashville for next week and first week of April. I was expecting a lot of $80's to low $100 per night but was surprised how expensive hotels are still running. Any reason? Are hotels just conceding they will have 10-30% occupancy no matter what rate they charge?

Anyone who NEEDS a hotel will still pay it.

Some of it's branding. And some of it is what you mentioned, pricing only matters so much right now.

A ritz will never be $100 a night no matter the economic climate.

They probably think (correctly) that pretty much anyone traveling now is doing so for business, and they can charge the standard rates because those will be reimbursed

Was looking at Chicago in late June and when this virus first happened rooms were cheaper. Now the same hotel is around another $40 bucks or so a night and an additional 21,000 Hilton points per night.
BS.

We learned after 9/11 and great recession that it takes too long to get your average rate/revpar back up if you deep discount. As others pointed out, there is only so much business out there.

Omni hotels is shutting down all but about 15 hotels through May. Here in Austin, the JW, Driskill, Line and others have already closed.

We've had 10-15 guests a night, regardless of pricing. Half of that is from an airline crew.

Not to say that you wont find deals, just depends on the operator/owner. Opaque websites are your best bet, like Hotwire. We can deep discount there without the rest of the public or competition knowing.
