Looking at late April/Early May for a New York trip.

Any advice on what airport to fly into, transport from airport, and where to stay?

Things we want to hit: WTC memorial, central park, Hamilton, (possibly one other broadway shows), what else? (Been to Statue of Liberty, wall st. times square about 20 years ago- would low on the priority list if we even go)

Restaurants? Wanting top notch Italian, Asian, and Steakhouse.

I prefer flying to Newark especially from IAH. It's the easiest to come and go especially going to midtown or downtown. You can take the train to Madison Square garden or just uber.

Try to get to NY midday and traffic will be minimal. Fly home mid afternoon or earlier. Basically avoiding rush hours.

See those other threads for food and other stuff.

Also based on all the things you want to see, I'd stay in midtown so you can easily get on several of the subway lines. And you're relatively close to most popular stuff except downtown but that's an easy subway ride.

For breakfast you can't beat Good Enough to East located on the upper west side, like 85th and Columbus. For Italian go to DaNico's in the Italian District and sit in their garden patio if the weather is nice. Have a drink at the Boathouse in the park, then watch the guys do their funny jumping around skit near the fountain.

LaGuardia is kind of a pain, but the other 2 are not bad. All have subway, shuttle or taxi options to the city. Generally how I decide the airport is based on what airline you are flying and flight prices honestly. Newark is the one that is used most often by me when booking.

I agree on Midtown/Central Park/Times Square area. Easy to get to and easy transportation options to other part of the city. Lots to do within walking distance in this area.

Fly into Newark and you can take the train from the airport to Penn Station. IIRC, it's like $15 round trip and is about a half hour train ride. That's the easiest and cheapest way to get into NYC from the airport.

Newark for sure. I tend to like midtown around Herald Sq. I also like north of Times Sq (53rd and 7th-ish) which is far enough north to stay out of the TS chaos, and there are a couple of subway stops right there that can get you anywhere in the city in no time. This will also put you close to your broadway shows. Either way, as mentioned, find a hotel very near a subway stop where preferably multiple lines stop.

Get a week long unlimited subway pass and download the MTA app. That app is absolutely awesome.

See the Statue of Liberty via a ride on the Staten Island ferry. You'll get an upclose look and photo op while saving tons of the day for other things.

If you like visiting college campuses, go up to Columbia. Kind of crazy to see that campus plopped in the middle of NYC. You can work Central Park into this trip up. Museum of Natural history - you'll see more stuffed dead things in one place than you'll see for the rest of your life.

I like flying into Newark as well, although it's usually just whichever airline has the best deal.

Midtown area is my favorite place to stay in, centrally located but not as crazy as Times Square. You have access to subway everywhere. Hilton Midtown is a favorite as is the JW Marriott near Central Park.

And, I'll second the week long subway pass and the MTA app, it works so well! We only take two taxi's for our trips --- one from the airport and one back to the airport. Use the subway!

Check out some of the other threads on New York...there are some great suggestions!

Stay in Times Square or Midtown, especially if you plan to do broadway shows or go to some of the live TV things (they are in the Lincoln Square area). Since those are late night / early morning things, you want to stay in that area. It is also within walking distance of Hells Kitchen, Central Park, 5th Avenue, and the Fashion District.

Order Hamilton tickets now. You can always do the half price booth for another broadway while there.

Dont be afraid to use the Subway - by far the easiest way to get across town. And its safe. And taxis are expensive.

We hired a shuttle service (towncar) to get from LaGuardia to times square. Took 40ish minutes. I felt it was worth it traveling with bags.

We did one of those bus tour routes our first couple days there. It was good because you can ride on top and SEE where you are going. So its a good way to see the city. and you can get off and get back on whenever you want.

Don't waste days of your life in line to go to the Statue of Liberty. The Staten Island Ferry goes within a few hundred yards of both it and Ellis Island. It will only take an hour out of your day and you can get some great views for very cheap.

Try to find something to do in as many "neighborhoods" as possible. New York is a VERY diverse city and its worth it to see it all.

This is something I really enjoy doing. We've walked around Columbia and it is a beautiful place. We also hit up Princeton since it was about a half hour drive from my SIL's place in NJ. Next time I'm in Chicago, I'm going north to Evanston and south to UChicago.

One of my favorite places is the Hilton Garden Inn At 34th and Herald Square. Super close to the subway and will get you out of the Time Square hustle and bustle. As far as something different from Hamilton. Aladdin is a really great Broadway show.
