I'm visiting with two friends in mid October for a week spread between the two.

What can we not miss? What should we book in advance?

We're definitely going to Toledo. Possibly a day trip to Monserrat.

Barcelona, we plan on seeing as much Gaudi as possible. Let me know if there's any special tips for these.

Make sure before you go to establish what is open. A lot of the gaudi stuff is seasonal. Maybe not the major major stuff but if you want a see it all type approach you'll get exterior only on some of it.

My favorite part of Toledo (lived there for 6 weeks) was just walking around the city and exploring the nooks and crannies.

Also, I would try to catch a soccer game in one of the cities. Atletico Madrid will be your cheapest option. But if you can get Real Madrid or Barca tickets, you will not regret it.

Toledo is a great day trip from Madrid! There is a cheap, fast, and comfortable train from Madrid to Toledo. We did a tour in Toledo with a guide from Rick Steves, Juan Jose Espadas . Great time and the history is amazing. You must see the Cathedral. Do not plan on dinner in Toledo, just take the train back to Madrid and hit up a tapas place. There are several good places to eat near the train station in Madrid. Have fun!
