You can rent a WiFi hotspot device which is convenient since multiple devices can connect to it and use the WiFi. It also saves you from paying extra for GPS navigation in your rental car since you can pull up Google map on your phone.

most SIM cards you buy for your phone allow tethering. so you can share the connection with your companion without having to rent another device. just another way to do it.

The rental car place I used also rented hotspots, and it was awesome. They have great internet (speed AND coverage) over there, and I don't really recall seeing many cell towers. What an awesome trip. Thanks for all the help.
