Anyone ever been here? We're thinking of going next summer. Thoughts on Torremolinos and/or Malaga?

Went there almost 20 years ago. For some strange reason I was looking at it on google earth a few weeks ago. Looks like it has grown up quite a bit. It used to be really cheap. No clue about it now. Very pretty place.

We went to that area last June. Stayed in Benalmedina (just south of Torremolinos).

Really enjoyed everything about it. The food was amazing. The scenery was fantastic with the huge mountains coming down to the Mediterranean.

We took a day trip to the Rock of Gibraltar (I HIGHLY recommend this).

Did another day trip to the Alhambra, an old Moorish castle a little northeast of there. Hell, it was worth it just for the drive...makes a drive in the Hill Country pale in comparison.

We'd also thought about a day trip to Morocco, but just ran out of time.

Spent lots of time on the beach (water is a bit cold, though).

Another thing I'd kind of wanted to go see was the Tabernas Desert a little east of there in the Almeria area.

It's the only desert in Europe and it's where they've filmed LOTS of movies...most of Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns were filmed there. They have several area set up like old west towns that you can go visit apparently.

We went a number of years ago too, and stayed in a smaller town/area south of Torremolinos, called Fuengirola.

Did essentially what the previous post mentions, but we also ended up taking the ferry across to Tangier (from Algeciras, across the bay from Gibraltar). That was well worth a day. Camels, snake charmers, the Medina, and interesting food.

PS - going into Gibraltar is interesting too, you park on the Spanish side, go through customs/immigration, and then get to literally walk across the airport's runway to get to the city.

They let you drive now. It's really freaky looking left and right and seeing runway as you're crossing it.

And then, you're in England.

ETA: the runway

You can see the road across it..
