Jefferson's Monticello is 2 hours west (Monroe home-Highlands- is is a couple miles from there and Michie Tavern is close by)

Mt Vernon is 2 hours north.

Montplier, Home James Madison is about 50miles north of Monticello

Shenandoah Valley/Drive is about an hours drive to the NW of Monticello.

Colonial Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown have days of adventure. John Tyler home just up the road from WBurg.

Thanks. We are thinking about going there during our off week in FB. Know it will be busiest time of year because of fall foliage.

What time of year? The Outer Banks are cool even a little past season.

Drive to Charlottesville and tour wineries - start at Veritas. Spend the night & then tour more wineries the next day. VA wine country is excellent.

1st reply covers it all - We did everything on their list last year except Mt. Vernon. We will do that when we got o D.C. We went during thanksgiving week, left Friday and returned Thursday.

Good trip and great time with the kids. Yorktown was a great visit. James town was nice, but very elementary field trip like.

Hit the Trump Winery after Jefferson's house. Bad wine but a nice view.

visited University of Virginia (in Charlottesville).

Great suggestions above- have lived in the Tidewater area of Virginia for 15 years and it is a beautiful place. If you want to get a taste of some smaller coastal towns, there is a great area about 45 minutes-1 hour from Williamsburg called the Northern Neck. Most of the towns are on the Chesapeake Bay and the many rivers that feed into it. Fall is one of my favorite times to go there- prime oyster season and you can experience the fall color without the congestion of the Shenandoah. The Virginia tourism organization has a great site with lots of tips organized by region- just look for the area around the Chesapeake Bay. Some of the waterfront towns are Urbanna, Deltaville, and Irvington. Awesome place for oysters is in Topping. It's called Merroir- nothing but oysters and a beautiful setting on the Rappahannock River.

Sorry, this is my first ever post - don't have my Ag tag linked. Trying to figure all of this out. Enjoy!

Merroir- great oyster place
