Not sure about staying in the city center itself, but we stayed in a full AirBnB just outside of the city and it was great. A minute walk to the train station and a ten minute ride into the city but also got to see a little of the Scottish suburbs. Inexpensive and got to meet some nice locals that shared some great info.

We stayed at Apex International Hotel, right at grassmarket square. The view of the castle was unbelievable, it didn't even look real, and there were loads of things to walk to from that area.. attractions, restaurants/bars, shopping. We walked there from the train we took from london.

I just booked rooms at the Edinburgh City Centre (Princes Street) Premier Inn. Walking distance to the train and seems to be in an awesome location.

Thanks!

We looked at these. Decided to rent the Rock House on Calton Hill. We are two families so it will give us a common area and a super cool house.

We stayed at the Balmoral because my wife really wanted to. Property is awesome but cost a lot. Right above waverly.

Staying at the Principal on George Steet for the first leg of our trip in May. Very expensive during the busier season, but we caught a good rate for a few days. Staying at the Hampton by Hilton during our second leg in Edinburgh after visiting the Highlands.
