I am in the process of planning an 8 day trip to Brazil. I'm trying to decided if I just want to rent a place in Rio and hang around there the whole time, or split the days between Salvador and Rio.

Has anyone been to Salvador? Thoughts? Is it worth a few days?

I've been once for a weekend. Historical downtown area is worth one day. There are several churches and other touristy things to do. Other than that, there didn't seem to be much more.

I loved it. I wish I'd known more about the food while I was there. Great night markets, incredible music. Packed beaches though.

The best part of my trip was going to Paraty, then trickling down the coast toward Sao Paulo via community buses and just hopping off wherever looked cool. Maresias was the highlight.
