So I'm taking the wife to San Antonio and crazy as it is, we've never been. We are staying 2 nights at a Marriott by the Riverwalk, but what are some must see sites? Basically will have 1 and a half days to bum around and do things.

Obviously the Alamo is a must, but other things we should visit/see?

Also, eating recommendations?? We like pretty much any food, but curious if there are "must eat" restaurants.

We haven't been in several years but we enjoy just walking the river walk. There's restaurants all along it and a mall at one end. Also usually some local artists and crafts. The Alamo is just a few minutes walk from your hotel. Have fun!

If you go, read up on the ghosts seen in that bar before hand. Makes it more fun.

Food on the river walk is generally overpriced and very mediocre. The last time we went to SA, we stayed at Hotel Havana, which is on the river, but not in the touristy part. Their restaurant, Ocho, is fantastic and the downstairs bar is super sexy.

The King Williams district is cool. You can Google a walking tour of historic houses, or just drive around. There are cool brew-pubs, bars, restaurants.

Rent bikes and ride the Missions trail and check out the other missions. They are each unique and beautiful.

San Antonio is a really cool city, and there's so much to see off the river walk. Don't spend all of your time there!

Or look for Jay in the bar or lobby. He's some rich eccentric Cali dude that lives at the hotel. Granted it's been a couple of years since we've seen and talked to him.

As said above there are not many good places to eat on the river. Paesano's is a local Italian restaurant where residents of SA go to eat. There are 3 in town. The one on the river is probably the best place to eat if you stay down on the River Walk. Walk up to Houston Street. There is a Palm Steak House that has good steaks and surprisingly good Italian food. Also on Houston Street is the BuckHorn Hall of Horns. I haven't eaten there in quit a while but I hear it is OK. Good place to go have a drink at least.

You can walk to Mi Tierra or La Margarita for Mexican food. Touristy but a good time and Mi Tierra is pretty well known.

Go have a drink at Dirty Nellie's on the riverwalk which has been there forever. Its a piano bar and can be fun. Touristy but fun.

People will tell you the food sucks and is overpriced. You are paying for the ambiance. A table outside by the river is good at Casa Rio for what it is. It is hard to screw up chips and salsa and a margarita.

Yet somehow last time we ate there they managed to do just that.

Yep, if you've never been, Casa Rio sitting outside next to the river is as classic Riverwalk as it gets. Just walking the river is fun also.

Also go to Mi Tierra and get an item or two from the bakery.

We walked down the river walk (past where all the touristy stuff ends) to the Geunther House for an amazing breakfast. It's the original location of the San Antonio flour mill built in the 1850s for what is today Pioneer Flour.

The restaurant is in the original house and you can walk around it while you wait for a table. And again the breakfast/brunch is amazing. The walk to and from along the river was really nice too, through the historic district. You walk by the HEB headquarters on the way. You can also see the site of one of the original mills that used the river water along the way.

San Antonio is a GREAT city.

You're staying on the Riverwalk downtown:
  • The Alamo is the "must see" that's on most people's minds, but be aware that there are 4 other missions in San Antonio on the Mission Trail.
  • People also think of the Riverwalk as just existing downtown, but it stretches pretty far beyond that area, both North and South. Either direction provides a nice option for a run or stroll outside the tourist epicenter
  • You've got to make your way to the San Fernando Cathedral to see the Saga light show. It's very impressive. It runs on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays At 9PM, 9:30PM, And 10PM.
  • The best meal you're going to find on the riverwalk is Esquire Tavern. Aside from that, the good eats are off the river.
  • Also downtown is The Last Word, which is a cool cocktail place.

Walk Market Square if you choose. Mi Tierra is the iconic spot over there.

Now, outside the typical tourist footprint:

The Pearl District has become a "cool spot."
  • The Granary is an interesting spot for "fancy bbq," they also brew on-site.
  • Southerleigh is the other top notch spot for nice dining in the Pearl (and also brews on-site).

The Southside's King William District is becoming the go to cool spot.
  • Cascabel is a great lunch option.
  • B&D Ice House is a divey spot with some really good BBQ.
  • Liberty Bar is a great choice for whatever meal you can fit in. They also do brunch on the weekends - it's a huge place.
  • Stella Public House has a good bar scene and a good brunch menu.
  • Bar 1919 is the coolest cocktail bar in town

Elsewhere around town:
  • King's Hwy Brew & Q is a cool fusion of Mexican & Barbecue. It (along with B&D) has the best bbq I've had in town. (I've yet to try 2M Smokehouse or B Daddy's)
  • McNay Art Museum is the best museum in the city - it sits in a highe Mediterranean style mansion.
  • Brackenridge Park is the best park in the city - the Japanese Tea Gardens are worth a visit
  • Freetail Brewery is the beer bell cow of San Antonio.
  • Ranger Creek is a "brewstillery" on the northeast side of town.
  • The Spurs are pretty good. You might want to catch them in action.

Thanks everyone for all the recommendations! We did quite a few of them for our dining this weekend and loved it. We left this afternoon but thoroughly enjoyed both the Riverwalk and the newer Pearl district.

Looking forward to a return trip. Beautiful city

Schilo's Deli for lunch. Very close to riverwalk, but on street level. An old German Deli that has been there for 70 years. They make their own root beer. Fantastic sandwiches. It's on Commerce St and in walking distance from the Marriott
