Have a wedding to attend this July in Connecticut. Almost booked flights earlier and had a wild thought about making a road trip and extending the week to see some sights along the way. Any recommended must sees or places to eat? Driving from East Texas. Suggestions? Don't do it, just fly? TIA

I drove from Houston to NYC in two days one time with some short site seeing stops along the way and it was a lot of driving. I drove about 15 hours the first day and about 12 the second day. I would plan on taking 3 days at least one way if you want to stop along the way.

It you do go, I highly recommend making sure you spend some time in western Virginia along the I-81 route. Natural Bridge near Lexington is really cool. It's slow, but get off 81 and drive at least part of Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park. Charlottesville is about 30 miles east of 81, off I-64. The town is great and of course, Monticello. The homes of Presidents Madison, Monroe and Wilson are all along I-81, plus Stonewall Jackson too.

Don't do it!
If you want to extend the trip, do a loop around the northeast - Boston and the Cape, Portland, Acadia NP, Vermont. Could even throw in NYC. I think that would make a much better road trip. You could fly into either Hartford (BDL) or Boston.

Did a long internship in CT once upon a time. It took 2.5 days to drive up there and move in. My dad and I did a 27 hour long straight drive back from Manchester to Irving on the way back. You will spend all your time driving if you opt for that, unless you really really want to see civil war stuff in Virginia.

If the wedding is on the western side of CT, fly to NY and see NY. Can take trains to Stamford or New Haven from there.

If the wedding is in Hartford or eastern side, can fly to Boston or Bradley. There is nothing to see in Hartford, but can see Boston or rent a car and see Newport, RI and also check out Mohegan Sun Casino.

Thanks for the replies and info. Wedding is in Goshen, CT so looks to be NW part of the state. May opt to fly into NY as we've seen Boston before.

Traffic from the NY airports can be brutal depending on what time of day. The stretch between LGA and JFK can add an hour plus in traffic. If you can get a decent flight into BDL you could take the metro north train into NYC and leave a rental car parked at the station, no need for a car there.
The NW part of the state is beautiful and you could have a nice varied trip seeing that and NYC, also think about adding in Hudson Valley.

I agree with random ag. Fly and use the extra days to see the northeast. While no fall foilage at this time. Acadia National Park, the new england coast with a possible trip to cooperstown and Niagra Falls would be great

Fly and explore the area more. One of our favorite trips was for a wedding in Norwalk back in October 2000. We actually flew into Providence, RI on a Thursday (was cheaper/ worked better with our schedule) and then drove to Mystic, CT for our first night stay. (It was only about a 45 minute drive. Our plane landed very late after delays.) We spent the first night and half of the next day in Mystic exploring the seaport, going by Mystic Pizza, the aquarium, etc... Then we headed to Groton (hoping to see the sub, but it was closed for repairs- still saw the museum) and then up the river road in the middle of the state stopping at different historic places along the way. We did stay in Hartford that night and then toured Mark Twain's house the next morning and really enjoyed that. We then spent the rest of Saturday exploring northwest CT and the litchfield Hills. It was October, beautiful colors, picturesque bridges/ rivers, small towns, etc... We stayed at a quaint B&B in Simsbury that night called the 1820 House. The next day we headed down to Norwalk for the wedding on Sunday afternoon and then on to New Haven that night. We did the campus tour of Yale the next morning before eating on the water on our way back to Providence to fly home. It's still one of our favorite trips. Of course, you won't have the colors in July, but we enjoyed really soaking in a whole state. (The only place we didn't cover was the farmland in the northeast.) If we'd had more time, we would have gone to Newport, RI to tour the mansions and such. You can make a great trip really exploring the area instead of driving all that way.

Definitely fly and explore. I drove CS to NYC way back when, and it was 25 hours, no stopping, so that's two days gone if you decide to drive. You're driving 90% just to stop and see 10%.
