Heading out for a few days in April. General recommendations are welcome. Also, where should we stay? I will be staying in an IHG property because of points, but there are a couple downtown (Gaslamp Quarter) and another one called Holiday Inn Bayside, just west of the airport. Are those all just fine or is one area better/more convenient in any way? We'll probably do city tourism one day and maybe something in nature one day. Thanks.

Lots of suggestions below. Can't go wrong with any combination. We went for 5 days I think, and looking back we did quite a lot but loved it all. Went a few years back with my wife. So much to do and see.

- Stay at the Marriot Gaslamp that's right next to Petco park. They have a cool rooftop bar with great views and walking distance to most places in the district. Affordable as well.
- Rent a convertible if the weather is supposed to be good. When in California...
- Try hiking at Torrey Pines State Reserve...very beautiful and easy trip. Not much planning involved really. Pines and coastline all in one spot right outside SD.
- Stop in La Jolla after Torrey Pines or some other time on your trip and check out seal cove and eat fish tacos at Wahoo's. Really good fresh fish in a small unassuming location.
- Try Balboa Park in SD. It's like Central Park for SD.
- San Diego Zoo is obviously awesome
- Go to Point Loma and hike up to the lighthouse. This is a short hike with great views over the bay. Good photo opportunity. Stop by Point Loma Seafood on the way there or back for more fresh fish (fish tacos are good).
- Drive over the bridge to Coronado Island, grab some food and walk the beach there late day/evening. Cool little island - basically a Navy military base (some rich ex Military types - Admirals and such live there) mixed with nice beach homes. Navy Seals HQ right down the beach a ways where they do BUD/S training.
- Plenty of wineries in the surround area you can drive out to.
- Newport Beach and Laguna beach right down the road.

Have a great time and let us know how it goes!

If you go out to Coronado you can check out the Del; the grounds are open to the pubic (which kind of sucks if you are staying there) and it's on an awesome wide beach. Lots of history.

All dining should be done in Little Italy. All the best restaurants there.

Is there such a thing as an uncool aircraft carrier?

May be too late to the show, but if you and your wife enjoy drinking beer SD has tons of great craft breweries. I recommend Alesmith, Council, Ballast Point and Societe, just to start.

Got back, had a fantastic time. We did Point Loma, a sunset sailboat cruise, the La Jolla sea caves kayak tour, hiked Torrey Pines, the USS Midway, general downtown exploring, ate at Little Italy, Seaport Village, did a dinner on Coronado and a morning beach stroll there as well, rented a convertible, ate fish tacos, drove around...It was awesome. Easily one of the best cities I've ever visited. Thanks for all the recs.

Just saw this.

Herb and Wood
Barbusa
Ironside

Those are top three nice dinners. For casual or lunch hit up Crack Shack.

Just got back and had an AWESOME time.

Did the Midway tour. A neat, thorough, go at your own pace "museum". Tons of aircraft if you're into that, and plenty of access to most of the ship if you want to explore. Get the headset/audio-guide (free). They did a great job of explaining what you were looking at, how it was used, etc.

Rented a convertible and drove all around. Coronado, Point Loma and the Cabrillo monument, up to La Jolla to check out the seals, sea lions, and a different coastal "look" than what SD has. That was an AWESOME idea.

The farmers market was in Little Italy on Saturday. Not sure how often they set up there but apparently it moves around to multiple spots during the week/weekend and every spot is cool and fun. We had a blast walking around it, eating street food, and getting samples from the farmers. Totally different feel and tastes than a farmers market in Texas.

Food:

Seriously, this is now one of my favorite destination food towns. Sea food, Mexican, Asian, Italian, breakfast joints, you name it. The town is awesome in the food department.

Our food highlights:

Bencotto Italian Kitchen - Little Italy
Two different locals told us this is their new favorite and it didn't dissappoint!

Cafe 222 - South area of downtown convenient to the gas lamp district and the convention center. Awesome breakfast including the famous peanut butter and banana stuffed French toast.

Richard Walkers Pancake House - Another breakfast joint in the same vicinity as Cafe 222. Insane good pancakes. The Dutch cinnamon apple pancake is ridiculous.

Top of the Market Fish Market and Restaraunt - right on the water, across the parking lot from the Midway. Excellent sea food and dessert.

Taka- sushi and other japanese cuisine in the gas lamp district. Easily (by a mile) the most fun dinner we had. He sushi was excellent! Go for dinner on the weekend, get a table on the patio and people watch. It's across the street from some happening places, the weather was awesome, the wine was great, the people were hilarious. It's at a really interesting confluence of foot traffic and there's never a dull moment (or at least there wasn't last night).
