If you live in Texas, I'd recommend the State Parks. There are nice ones in each region.

RV parks seem better suited for snow birds from up north that want a warm place to live inexpensively in the winter, but rarely do the have nice scenery or trails. That being said, many touristy towns such as Fredericksburg, Gulf Coast spots, etc. do have decent RV park locations.

We are in same boat.

So far only been to Garner and Pedernales Falls. Both were great.

For the weekend traveler, you really can't beat the State parks. There are 10 or so within 2 hours of the metroplex that we visit frequently. Other options:
The Corps of Engineers operate parks on many of their lakes. These can be hit or miss on quality & maintenance, and many are 1st come 1st serve.
Jellystone park - themed campgrounds for kids. One in Burleson near Ft. Worth & off 290 near Houston. More expensive, but lots of activities for the kids.
If you want to venture out, the state parks in Arkansas are even better than Texas. Check out Lake Caroline near Hot Springs.

We are heading to Garner this Aug. Looking forward to it. There is a really cool RV park in Canton, a few blocks from the Dairy Palace. The park has a fishing pond and a couple of swimming pools. Cabins also if you want friends to join you that don't have an RV. We also spent a long weekend near Galveston. Jamaica Beach. Only about 15 minutes into Galveston proper. The RV park was just across the highway from the beach. You can drive out on Jamaica Beach and lower your tailgate. The RV park there also had a couple of pools for kids, they showed kids movies outdoors at night and they served a pancake breakfast in the club house on either Sat or Sun morning.

We also stayed in what is now a Jellystone near Tyler. Was great with young kids. Finally, there is a park I haven't stayed at but driven through a couple of times. It's a state park, Daingerfield State Park. Looks beautiful. Small. 3 cabins or so and maybe 50 RV spots. A little store on the lake that sells camp and swimming stuff. You can check out canoes etc.

Lot depends on where you live. Lcra has a nice park in matagorda but it is expensive compared to state parks daily rate.

Make sure you check to see what hook ups are available if you are new to RVing. A lot of parks only have water and electricity or a limited number of full hook ups.

We have some friends opening up an RV park in Aggieland that is supposed to be pretty great! If you are looking for somewhere to stay for gamedays, I'd definitely check them out. They have a Facebook page and I believe a website. It is called Hidden Creek.

Agree w/tamc91. We have a small motorhome and we never stay at RV parks with the exception of the one at High Island (no state parks nearby). State parks just have more to do, and are more scenic as well. Fishing, boating/kayaking/canoeing, hiking, wildlife observation/photography can be done at the majority of SP's. Some even have swimming pools (Bastrop SP) and golf courses (Lockhart SP). Most RV sites at TX SP's don't have sewer hook-up's, but all parks with RV hook-up's will have a dump station.

Be aware that the more popular parks such as Brazos Bend, Inks Lake, Garner, Pedernales, McKinney Falls fill up extremely quickly. However, you can go to the SP website and make reservations many months in advance.

We like Martin Dies SP as it is often much less busy at times when other parks are full. Also like Sea Rim, Meridian, and Ft. Parker as they are smaller parks with fewer campsites, so you aren't camping with a hundreds of other people. We do not like Lake Livingston SP as the campsites are extremely close together.

At some point you will also have to check out the SP's in Arkansas. They spend a lot of money on their parks, and most of them have extremely nice facilities.

Supposedly the RV park at Grapevine Lake is nice. Great reviews.
