I got a gambling need that has to be fulfilled. Are lake charles casinos decent? $5 blackjack? Worth a couple hours drive?

Dont need the vegas replies, just want a quick one day gambling adventure.....and require $5 or less in blackjack

I think the only casino in Lake Charles now is L'auberge. I don't remember there being too many $5 tables but I'm certain someone else on this board can provide a better answer. Still I'd certainly suggest you make the trip there.

The service at the hotel is very good. And if you go, stop at Steamboat Bill's for cajun food. Try the crawfish etoufee. There are two of these restaurants there but I suggest the one located off IH-10.

an extra $5 per hand will allow you to play with people that won't split 10's.

Isle of Capri is still there. Last time I went there were plenty of $5 tables.

You could drive an extra 30-45 minutes and go to Coushatta. They'll have plenty of $5 tables.

drunken 5$ blackjack = isle or coushatta (i prefer coushatta)

resort, golf and more expensive = lauburge or whatever it is

If you are looking for cheap blackjack the isle or the Indian reservation are your place. Higher end gamblers prefer LaBaurge; tables there are high, especially on the weekend. Atmosphere is far superior to the other places, and the Snake River Grill is an excellent dining experience. Have not played golf there, but it looks like a good course f rom the road.

Is LDL ever going to get a poker room? Or do I have to wait until Sugarcane Bay opens next year?

I think I'll settle with IOC. They have a decent poker room. Why drive another 45 minutes to get to Coushatta?

Raven I played the course at LDL last weekend. It's good, but nothing spectacular. $49 after 2 pm and worth that.

L'Auberge - You will be extremely lucky if they have any $15 BJ tables. Usually the lowest table is $25/hand.

Isle of Capris will have some $5-10 tables, but the place is filled with garbage.

L'auberge - Very nice property.
-Little to no $5 tables on the weekdays. No $5 tables on the weekends. Normal minimum table on the weekends is $15.
-Most slots are 15 lines as compared to 9 lines at the other 2 casinos.
-No poker room. Sugarcane Bay is no longer in the works. There will not be another casino, and there will be no poker room anytime soon.
-The golf course is in horrible shape. The bunkers are very nice. The FWs, tees, and roughs are above average to average. The landscaping is horrible, and the greens are pathetic. They are about to replace the old greens with Champion bermudagrass. I doubt it makes a difference.
-Dining and atmosphere is by far the best of the three casinos. I just don't prefer the actual gambling here or the golf.

Isle of Capri
-The Isle is cheap. Cheap slots, cheap table games, and the only casino of the three that will serve you a free drink while you are not gambling.
-They have a poker room
-Atmosphere is kitschy. Dining is good.

Coushatta, my personal favorite
-The largest casino in Louisiana
-Some $5 tables but mostly $10 tables
-Twice as many slots than at the other casinos. From pennies all the way up to $500 credits
-They have a poker room also
-Possibly the nicest golf course in Louisiana. I haven't played a course in LA that I like better, and I've played most of the nice courses in LA
-Atmosphere is not as classy as LDL but not as trashy as the "Pile of Debris" as some people call the Isle. The dining is good. I really enjoy the Big Sky Steakhouse

Are there any family activites at the Coushatta property?
Rusty GCS

There is a very nice kid center with babysitters on hand watching kids play in ball pits, etc. It can be 100% trusted because there are camaras everywhere. All kids are accepted from infants to 12 year olds.

There is also an arcade for teenagers (a lot of dads play in here also with the kids while mom plays the slots).

Also, kids are welcome at every restaurant (not the case at L'auberge). They have a different colored carpet the kids are allowed to walk on through the casino to get to all the restaurants.

Also, 10 miles down the road on the actual Indian Reservation they have Pow Wow's a few times a year that are really cool to bring the entire family to. The tribe is the Alabama Coushatta's of Elton, LA. I'm not sure if they have a webiste to let everybody know when the Pow Wow's are

I wondered about attractions such as a water park, canoeing, etc. in the area. Have not been but sounds like a good side trip off of I-10.
Rusty GCS

There is a small water park in Sulphur which is exits 19-22 on I-10 and another small water park being built in Lacassine off of exit 48. Kinder is 20 miles north of I-10 from exit 44. There is canoeing in Oberlin, only 10 minutes away from the casino. It is on a river called Ouiska Chitto, pronounced Whiskey Chitta.

I hope this helps!

Speaking of Lake Charles...

My parents, sister and I are going to L'auberge next week - Tuesday thru Thursday.

Anyone have any recommendations of places to eat other than at the casino? I know the Jack Daniels Grill is good...but I'm hoping we can find other local places to eat.

Darrell's! It's the best thing LC has going for it. My favorite is the Surf and Turf sandwich. Most people go with the Darrell's special.

If you're looking for a nice meal Mazon's is the best in town. They are both on College St in between Ryan and Lake St. Really easy to find, College runs right beside the 210 Loop which is the main road that goes through LC.

Luna Bar and Grill and Pujo St Cafe for honorable mentions. Both have good food and good atmospheres in downtown LC, both on Ryan St.

When we go we never leave L'Auberge to eat.

The Snake River Grill is the best food in town and there is an Asian place at the casino also.

Pile of Debris? At least come up with something original, please - that way I can use it in my advertising. Ha! I'm very aware of our reputation, but in the 5 months that I and the rest of the new executive team have been here, we have been working very hard to turn this property around.

If you're looking for $5 tables, we (Isle of Capri or Pile of Debris, depending on who you are. *grin*) offers more $5 tables than anyone else in the market.

Oh, and guess what? Isle of Capri has more slot machines and tables than L'auberge. Now if they had not decided to scrap Sugarcane Bay, that might be the case, but they did scrap it.

Plus, if you are a poker player, not only does Isle have the largest poker room in Louisiana, but it is also the largest in the entire Mid-South.

Oh, and I will agree on Coushatta having the nicest course. Hands down the winner. Love Kosati Pines.

Other than that, if you have any questions regarding any casinos, I will be happy to answer them. And to whoever it was that mentioned Darrell's as a must eat - agree 100%. Get the Surf n' Turf or the Special, you won't be sorry!

AF98

p.s. Keep an eye on ALL the casinos in the market, as all three are undergoing or have undergone management changes recently. The only exception is Delta Downs, which has no tables.

I feel my review of The Isle is very fair. I personally like the Isle a lot. Not as much as Coushatta, but more than Lauberge. I usually only go to Lauberge for an occasional pool party. I feel the Isle has a very good niche. It is affordable for everybody and the closest place for the Texas gamblers to play poker.

And, when I referred to the Isle as the Pile of Debris I was just using an old local joke. It comes more from the type of people you see at the Isle (the type of crowd you are destined to get with cheap slots and tables). I was by no way referring to the establishment itself. I had previously described the atmosphere as kitschy.
quote:
Kitschy - So tacky or cliche' that it has a certain ironic appeal. i.e Lava Lamps and Trucker Hats

I love things that are kitschy.

Also, it was I who recommended Darrell's. I really miss them since moving to Texas in January

Big Kat,

I wasn't arguing with you, I was agreeing with you - trying to be funny. Unfortunately, I think I may be too tired to effectively make jokes.

Yes, we are kitschy (sp), probably not intentionally so, but we're going to run with it, since it is what was handed to us. Hopefully in the near future, major changes will be seen at the property. We are already running more promotions (geared to attract more people in, appeals to some, not to others), more advertising, and are starting to do some updating/remodeling to the actually property. Not enough, but it should make things a little nicer.

And hopefully, it will at least already look much cleaner. Plus, the food product is definitely starting to take a turn for the better. I wouldn't eat here when I first got here, now I have no issues doing so. (Or maybe that means my standards have gotten lower, ha!)

Anyway, if you decide to come by, let me know ahead of time.

We went for my bachelor party last summer. It was perfect for what we were looking for: free booze, gambling, and if damage was done it wouldn't have been noticed. haha Needless to say we had a blast.

We were thinking about making a return trip pretty soon so you better be ready Fencer....

Samm,

We have some pretty good rates right now for sure. (Just changed the whole rate structure) What are you looking for/wanting to pay, and I'll see what I can do.

Agsportsfan,

Just let me know before you come, and I'll try to help out.
