Stros are walking a fine line.

I imagine with it still being before the winter meetings they're not there yet, but I wonder how long they wait for Bregs and at what point do they pivot and move on to their contingency plan?

Everyone starting to report this like this is new news when it came out a week or more ago. Ketch dropped this like 2-3 weeks ago.

When Bregman leaves the only anger from astros fans should be pointed at him and not the front office. They gave a very fair competitive offer to try to retain him
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

$26M/yr for a 30 year old player is plenty fair. But I don't blame him for taking more if he can get it.

Guys make the choices that are best for them. I'm not going to be mad at a player who leaves for more money. I'm also not going to be mad at the Astros because what they offered him was fair.

Yeah I've never understood that mindset. If the Astros offer 156M and he takes, for example, 176M.. I don't think I can ever be mad at someone for taking an extra $20M dollars.

I think that is a good offer, if someone wants to pay him $200 million, so be it.
Mr.Bond

When you're at that point you're talking numbers you can't spend in a lifetime. If someone left a job making 100k for a job making 130k I get it..... but with what houston offered him that's over a quarter billion dollars in career earnings..... if he leaves over 20 million then so be it.

If he wants to play for a contender he's gotta understand some minor sacrifices

I would be interested to see how the taxes work out going somewhere like New York or LA for $200 million when compared to staying in Texas for $156 Million. I bet the difference is not as much as you would think.

$20M is an insane amount of money. I'm not leaving $20M on the table just to make sure I don't make a bunch of fans upset. I'm making sure my future generations are well taken care of…assuming the situation I'm walking into is good for my family.

It's irrelevant as far as these players are concerned. Not even worth discussing

Not the fans I'd be worried about. I'd want to win

Well on $200 million with half your games played in CA, it is $13-15 million at least. So not chump change.

It gets brought during every time a player hits the market and every time it seems it's not a factor.

Yes...Not chump change but I'm not convinced these guys are sitting here worried about taxes.

Bottom line is they want the biggest contract taxes be damned.

Yeah it's not about cash in their pocket. It's about ego and having the bigger contract than others at your position.

Correa is the only player I've ever heard talk about it as a negative of certain places (not that I've listened to many other players) and he still almost ended up in SF. I'm not sure the tax structure in Minnesota.

Saw one article that said Yoan Moncada would be another possibility at third for the Astros. That would be a humongous downgrade and I hope we don't go that path.

If I'm bregman and the Astros offer 6 years 156M, and another contending team offers me closer to the 7 or 8 years for $200M… I'd take the money.

According to this board the Astros run is over, they're not contending, and the management is in shambles....

Yet you expect Bregman to take less money to stay with us....

I don't honestly expect it him to stay for less, but I do expect him to regret leaving for more if it isn't to play for a team with a chance to do more than sniff the playoffs from a distance. Correa and Springer can probably talk to him about how bad it sucks to lose more games than you win and to be watching baseball on TV in October instead of playing. Bregman strikes me as the type to be competitive enough that he will be miserable playing for a mediocre team.

Do you think if it came down to say 20 million, the Astros would try and bridge the gap?

Also, I wonder how much if any, things like jersey in the rafters, endorsement deals for life, etc. becoming a hero, matter? Is it worth any hall of fame votes staying with one team your whole major league career?

I wonder if there is a number to put on it. I've seen other teams in other sports basically promise a job and a paycheck to bridge the gap post playing career.

I wonder if the leak is to try and talk the 170+ million teams to 200 million to get Bregman, because the Astros have already figured out how to bridge the gap to 176ish.
Mr.Bond

Just defer the 20 million over 20 years starting in 2040

Building a legacy with a franchise is really important to him personally but I know priorities have changed since he started a family. I think he ultimately does what's best for them- which could very well be staying here in Houston for all I know.

As far as whether the Astros would up their offer- I honestly don't know. I doubt it but that's just my guess. Things have been really quiet overall.

Could really use some good Stros news sometime soon, but we are not getting that from Breggy soon ... If someone gives Breggy $200M, then I think he is as good as gone, but if he is only going to get a bit more than the $156M, I would hope we'd expand a bit to get it done, but that won't happen for a long time on the market

Our run isn't over until we miss the postseason altogether. We are not at the 2017-2022 level anymore of consistently winning 95-106 games, breezing through the division and easily getting to the ALCS

We are still a playoff contending team next year, but it'll be a 87-91 win type of season.

I think next year will be very similar to the 2024 season record wise … 88-74 or 89-73 getting a wild card slot

My question for him would be what can he do for his family with $200 million that he can't do with $156 million?
texasaggie2015

That's nearly $40M. He can build $40M more of generational wealth.

Also, where does he think is the best place to raise his family? What do they value?

There's a lot that goes into it. We really have no idea what's important to them at the end of the day.

I think if he gets 200 mil he is gone. But I can see if the other best offer is say 176 to the Phillies. The Astros could go 166 and keep him. But the Astros may not want to move off 156. I see the legacy, off books money, other intangibles being valued at around 5-10 million for Bregman.

Not throw away money by any means. But when you've amassed over a quarter billion dollars it's not THAT significant
