I like the Heaney deal.

This is what it feels like when you aren't poor.

I may have to start rethinking my October plans soon.

Ranger fans you're not dreaming! The Rangers are the World Series Champions!

Here is why I like the Heaney deal.

Heaney (31-L): Career 4.56. Two years at $12.5M Per.

Otto (26-R): 27GS, 4.64 ERA, 135.2 IP in 2022

Otto has 5 more years of team control. All you need from Heaney is to replace Otto, but hopefully he is better.

Now, Otto is a trade chip. A 26 year old throwing a 4.64 in his 1st year and with 5 more years of team control is incredibly valuable as he enters his prime. Two years as a serf with a mid 4.0 ERA.

Pittsburgh is rumored to need two SP and if Reynolds gets traded, they'll need a CF. They were linked to Gibson who got 1 yr/$10M after two years in Philly at 5.0+ ERA. Lyles could be one that ends up there. You get Otto instead of Gibson in 2023 for $600K v $10M and that is huge.

Dunning (27-R): 29 GS, 4.46 ERA, 153.1 IP. 4 years of team control. Serf in 2023 @ $600K.

You can now give up Otto, Dunning, Plus others for $1.2M in cost to Pittsburgh filling in their need for 2 SPs that likely are as good or better than they could get on the market @ $10M per.

Pittsburgh could have signed Heaney, but that would have been one of those $10M+ SPs.

IF Otto/Dunning blossom to sub-4.00 ERA in 2 years great. The Rangers have guys that won't be here until 2 years and expectations are higher for them than a 4.00 ERA.

What do Ranger lose for signing DeGrom?? Their 2nd rounder?
Andrew Heaney? Their 3rd????

Heaney didn't have a QO, so I believe there is no penalty for him.

For deGrom:

Quote:

All other teams will lose their second-highest selection in the following year's Draft, as well as $500,000 from their international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period.

If one of these teams signs two such players, it will also forfeit its third-highest remaining pick and an additional $500,000.

If we sign Rodon... it will cost us our 3rd pick.

Levi Weaver says that Heaney left money on the table and had 9 other offers. Says that CY is doing a helluva job selling the teams future and his vision to free agents.

Pitchers in the 95th percentile or better in whiff rate, chase rate & strikeout rate, 2022:

Andrew Heaney
Jacob deGrom
Andrs Muñoz
Edwin Daz

Highest chase rate induced as SP, 2022 (min 500 out-of-zone pitches):

Kevin Gausman: 39.7%
Jacob deGrom: 37.5%
Andrew Heaney: 36.9%
DallasAg 94

He has a lot to sell.

Semien (31) and Adolis (29) are the veterans. Which means there is a ton of upside on an already performing offense.

Replacements:
Kole Calhoun: 125G, 388 AB, .196 BA, .257 OBP
Josh Smith (24): 73G, 213 AB, .197 BA, .307 OBP
Mitch Garver: 54G, .207 BA
Miller: 81G, .212
Ibanez: 40G, .218

That's two whole positions for the entire season that we should easily replace.

I would be surprised if we signed another FA SP, unless it was a reclamation project. Out top 4 are now set. And we have young arms that need to be given a chance.

Man, you aren't lying at all. Us Mavericks fans have seen it all. We're so mentally abused that nobody is posting on the 22-23 Mavericks thread just to avoid jinxing it - - this after 3 really nice wins in a row.

If you see this post, DON'T POST ON THE MAVERICKS THREAD.

Good NYT article about what the rangers are doing.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/06/sports/baseball/jacob-degrom-rangers.html

Quote:

Bruce Bochy's telephone buzzed on Friday, and Chris Young, the general manager of the Texas Rangers, was on the line. After some general chitchat, Young cut to the chase.

We got him, he informed Bochy. Jacob deGrom is ours.

"Euphoria hits at that point," Bochy said at the winter meetings this week, describing that phone call from Young. "I couldn't have been more thrilled, more excited that we were able to bring him here."

So wondering which pitching is now a bullpen piece vs. trade vs. send back down.

Gotta answer this to decide what is needed to fill out the bullpen.

Dunning (trade)
Burke (bullpen)
Hearne (bullpen)
Otto (trade)
Ragans (?)
Wnn (?)
Howard (?)

I got an itch to look at the BP, ironically we both probably see that as the next concern. My approach starts with what we might already have. Then, IMO, we squeeze in what else we can.

I think you are right on with trading Dunning & Otto. Also, Burke and Hearne in the BP.

This isn't exhaustive, but meant as a snapshot of who may play a major role. Probably have 6-8 RPs.

RHP
Leclerc (28): 39 G, 2.83 ERA, 47.2 IP, 54 SO, 10.2 SO9
Barlow (26): 35 G, 3.86 ERA, 35.0 IP, 28 SO, 7.2 SO9
Hernandez (25): 29 G, 2.97 ERA, 30.1 IP, 27 SO, 8.0 SO9

LHP
Burke (25): 52 G, 1.97 ERA, 82.1 IP, 90 SO, 9.8 SO9
Martin (27): 55 G, 4.14 ERA, 50.0 IP, 40 SO, 7.2 SO9

Minors we might see (Both RHP):
Chase Lee (23-AAA/AA): 51 G, 4.07 ERA, 11.5 SO9
Grant Anderson (25-AAA/AA): 47 G, 3.48 ERA, 12.2 SO9

Getting greedy... I think we need a bonafide Closer. If it is between Rodon and a Closer, I'd lean towards a Closer, but that assumes one is available.

I didn't look at Hearne (28) initially, but as part of reply to your post, I'll give his Splits:
SP: 13 GS, 6.25 ERA, 59.0 IP, 54 SO, 8.2 SO9
RP: 18 GP, 3.51 ERA, 41.0 IP, 43 SO, 9.4 SO9

I think there is some upside to Hearne.

Emmanuel Clase for Kluber.

Well right now, one outfielder and BP help is what we need.

Didn't see you mention Alexy as a BP piece. I had him penciled in along with your three as sure fire keepers. If you kept Burke and Hearne there, you only need two more arms. A real closer would be the best signing right noW iMHO.

Speaking of the bullpen. I hope they move Howard to the bullpen. I think he has the stuff to excel there.

Are there any names out there in the Rule 5 that are worth making a spot for? I have no idea, but we'd obviously have to make a spot to be able to pick up someone.

Agreed. He hasn't been successful as a starter, so maybe he is like Hearne and can be more successful out of the pen.

I like Alexy, but would like to see more from him. It is why I took a different approach. Where you were thinking who transitions to the BP... I'm trying to see how many spots we have filled.

If we start with 6-8 RPs and we have 5 pretty sure bets... Alexy would rank maybe 6th, but I think there are a couple others that might be ahead of him.

RP is also probably better to add mid-season, so trot Alexy out there, now.
