Him being pedestrian without the sticky stuff could also have something to do with it.
Hmmmm..... Are you sure about that?
ERA = 2.59 (4th in NL, 4th in MLB)
K/9 = 11.5 (3rd in NL, 5th in MLB
WHIP = 1.00 (4th in NL, 4th in MLB)
Yes.
From where are you pulling those numbers? His entire 2021 season? The sticky stuff crack down happened June 21. He was using this season for all but 2 of his starts.
He started using in 2020. Every season before that his ERA was above 4. He had a good 2018 but that was the exception. Then he started using sticky stuff and became the best starter in baseball.
Truthfully, we don't know how he would've done the rest of the season, but when you look at what he did before he starts using it, he was pedestrian.
He was the absolute best at using the sticky stuff, though. Which makes sense because he really studied it to try and get it stopped. When he went to the Reds he decided he'd just start using, and their team saw the highest Spin rate gain of any team in the majors. That then happened again when he went to the Dodgers.
This is coming from someone who kind of likes the guy, too. I find what he would do with social media pretty entertaining, and his outlook on the game and training to be very interesting.
