Not sure who caught this last night. Padres were down 8-0 at one point against Scherzer with Darvish getting roughed up. The night before was a long bullpen game so they called up some new arms. With the bases loaded and two outs, they had to hit the newly called up pitcher to keep him in the game. He gets down to two strikes and proceeds to golf one out to right field for his first ever hit, a grand slam. He's also from San Diego and his family was at the game. Padres ended up winning in the 9th, 9-8.

I still do, even as much as I loved that moment.

It's going to happen. It should happen. Embrace it.

One outlier every 40 games doesn't mean otherwise.

This probably deserves it's own thread, but it's really complicated for me.

As an old ball player, we all hit, played the field and pitched. I wish MLB had more of that feel rather than these specialists. I don't particularly enjoy watching some fat turd that can't play the field walk up as a DH but of course watching a pitcher go up there and pretend to hit is just about as bad.

So ideally, I'd like to see pitchers spend more time working on their hitting, but the complicated part is the money. If I'm paying Max Scherzer 30 million per year, do I want him going all out on the bases and taking big cuts out there risking injury?

Ohtani is doing it this year, playing like we did as kids pitching and then getting back in the lineup the next day, but he's only making like 4 million. When he's a free agent and someone signs him for 30 million, we'll see how he's used.

Either way, I'll be sad when the DH is here to stay in both leagues. Takes away the strategy aspect and gives jobs to fat turds.

Alright then, if you feel that way, how about making those pitchers stand in the batter's box and get what's coming to them!?!

It's not just about having pitchers hit, it's also about making a pitcher stand in the batter's box and repent for their sins on the mound...

This take is so bad. If someone wants revenge they aren't giving the pitcher a free pass, not to mention how little they actually bat.

Whatever. I'm not talking about any and every pitcher, I'm talking about the habitual offenders, i.e. Roger Clemons types...

Pitchers are a part of the ball team... yeah?

So let them hit like the rest of the team...

This isn't little league. They're on the roster to pitchnot hit. Such a ridiculous take.

Well, in the national league they are currently on the team to both pitch and hit. It's not really a valid comparison.

Many/most of these pitchers have have done very little (if any) hitting since HS. At this point, it's kind of a joke to have them hitting when they make the majors

And forgive me for thinking that strategy to manage around what is basically a semi-functional tard in your lineup is not at all interesting. Just like I wouldn't find it interesting to watch a little league coach work to minimize how much fat Jimmy with the not-entirely-developed stub gets exposed in key games.

DH is lame.

AL managers should only get half pay....they make 2 decisions a game

When to pull the pitcher and where to eat after the game.

There is absolutely no difference in managing in the NL and the AL.

I know I'm in the minority but I have always thought the DH took a lot of the strategy and managing "art" out of the game. I prefer the pitchers hitting. NL baseball to me is more interesting because of it although as an Astros fan I don't watch much NL baseball anymore.

Yeah, guys missing bunts and batting 0.050 sure is interesting.

I used to feel that way, too, but pitchers really aren't getting the opportunity to develop into hitters anymore. In all levels of baseball, the DH has become prevalent--it's the default in college, A ball, and even mostly used in AA and AAA. AA and AAA pitchers bat only if both teams are NL farm teams--which means that for most high-level minor league teams, they're using a DH in at least half their games.

So pitchers get far, far fewer plate appearances to develop decent batting skills. Let's all just be honest that they're specialists, and replace the lineup spot with a hitting specialist. That way you can keep your Mario Mendoza in your lineup for his glove, and not sweat the pitcher's spot so much.
aggiephoenix02

That's dumb.

Are you saying catchers aren't specialists? Oh, yeah, they are!

Even with some infielders it's a cost benefit ratio of how good they are defensively and how well they hit.

Let's be clear for a second; there isn't a rule keeping pitchers from hitting in the AL. If they could, they would. See the way the Angels get Ohtani in the lineup and allow him to pitch. But nearly all pitchers can't do it at a level that makes sense.

Forcing them to hit in the NL asinine. No one wants to see that.
DannyDuberstein

If catchers basically didn't hit since HS before reaching the majors, then you might have a comparison on "specialist". But they do hit in college and the minors as much as every other fielder. Pitchers do not. LOL at you calling the post above dumb and then making to point you just tried to make

A rule that has been around for 50 years is "ruining the game". We may have to dig up a long dead old man to yell at the clouds for this one. A regular old man wont suffice, too young
