So basically Angel missed one pitch in 6. Brutal.

That's little league dad level umpiring. And I say that having been a LL dad umpire for 3 seasons.

Tennis can review in/out calls in less than 5 seconds. MLB could implement something similar if it had the desire.

Batter/pitcher says challenge. Umpire gives a signal the video crew. Pitch location/strike zone pops up on the big screen. Call stands or is reversed. Move along.
I don't disagree, but then why not just go full on auto/robostrike zone at that point? No worry about wasting challenges, showing up umpires by challenging, etc.

Agreed. I think it's all or nothing. Baseball doesn't need another silly thing interrupting the flow of the game like strike challenges. If it can't be done fast enough to replace the existing system then wait until it is.

I think either solution is better than the current solution

Tyler is on 1yr/$1.5MM this year. We could have done that. It's really early and it's a very small sample size so the jury is out to see if Click made a mistake.

Why didn't we sign him?
Because he's been injured and inconsistent. If he weren't an Aggie he wouldn't even be on our radar.

You mean the .702 OPS and 84 OPS+ over the last 4 years didn't scream pay me, James?

I looked at that twitter account. The next lowest accuracy by an umpire yesterday was 90%. Why does this guy still have a job?

Its almost as if baseball likes to keep him around for the controversy. Like they don't mind it being an element of the game.

Funny thing is he thinks mlb is racist and hasn't let him call a World Series since 05 because of that

Andy Fletcher called a hell of a game yesterday. 97% of 173 pitches.

All of Fox Sports. Read that Disney was forced to sell all of the Regional Fox Sports rights as part of the acquisition of 21st Century Fox
The Fox regional networks are owned by Sinclair broadcasting who also owns a bunch on local TV stations around the country. They sold the "naming rights" to the Vegas casino Bally. Bally doesn't actually own the regional networks.

George is having some injury issues early

I'm definitely not rooting against George at all. He was my favorite Astro for 5 years... but it would not hurt my feelings if his best years were the ones he spent in Houston. I hope he makes a couple more all star games and plays well. But I would rather him not be an MVP type of player for a team that we might potentially play in the postseason at some point

I like George too much for him to have lingering issues but I'm curious if our training staff picked up on something and thus kept us from making a stronger push to keep him.

Are soft tissue muscle strains really that detectable? I'm not sure either way so I'm genuinely curious. I figured these are associated with him being an older player now

Bummer for George and the Florida Blue Jays.

I'm too big of a fan of George's to ever root against him unless it negatively impacts the Astros.

Reds have 5 runs on 2 hits. The Pirates might lose 111 this year.

One possibility: it could also be a case where he had issues like this in Houston but didn't report them to the team and played through them because he didn't want an injury history to hurt his value when it came time to go into free agency. Now, he has his big guaranteed deal, and things like this might be more likely to get reported to the team because there's less risk in damaging future value.

I imagine the George situation is playing out pretty close to how the Astro brass expected. Probably a little earlier than they expected but I imagine this is what they imagined would happen with giving a him a 6 year deal at his age.

This year is the 35th anniversary of my favorite season of Astros baseball (1986) so I am combining my two obsessions - writing and baseball history - into a day-by-day historical lookback at the '86 season, which had its opening day 35 years ago tomorrow.

I know some of you guys are old (or older) like me and have a lot of fond memories from the '86 team, so I look forward to recalling them with you. If what I'm doing seems really dumb, feel free to ignore.

As an opener, the Astros had gone 83-79 in 1985 and finished third in the NL West, but the effort had not saved the jobs of either manager Bob Lillis or GM Al Rosen. That team did have three players really emerge - rookie 1B Glenn Davis, who hit 20 HR and dove in 64 in 100 games to finish 5th for Rookie of the Year, 26-year-old RF Kevin Bass, who in his first full season hit .269 with 16 HR, 68 RBI, and 19 SB, and #3 starter Mike Scott, who had never won more than 10 games in a season, then went 18-8 with a 3.29 ERA in 1985 at age 30.

Lillis was replaced by 43-year-old Hal Lanier and Dick Wagner took over for Rosen.

During the winter meetings, Wagner made two small deals that turned out to be huge for the '86 team. The first was trading 34-year-old OF Jerry Mumphrey to the Cubs for 25-year-old OF Billy Hatcher. The second was sending the Astros' longtime staff ace Joe Niekro, 40 yeras old and coming off a 9-12 season, to the Yankees for a rookie named Jim Deshaies.

Sports Illustrated picked the Astros to finish 5th of 6 teams in the NL West, with the Dodgers atop the heap.

Coming tomorrow: Opening Day (Spoiler alert, it sucked).

What a great idea! When Gerrit Cole got in that groove two years ago he made me keep thinking of Mike Scott during that year.

Someone posted a link to the Billy Hatcher corked bat story the other day. I had almost forgotten that. But what I'll never forget is where I was during his at bat in that long playoff game against the Mets.
