Those are some good relievers. As far as just overall players, Scherzer will be the biggest name on the market this deadline if he is healthy.

Daniel Bard is interesting. From Houston and assuming my stats should improve leaving Colorado. Also upper 90s fastball would be great to have a hard thrower in the pen.

My worry is what do we have that we can trade away?

this, aside from guys that are already contributing like Garcia, and who we wouldn't want to let go, the cupboard is pretty bare

Who are some prospects you are willing to part with that can pull a big time reliever?

I'm genuinely curious because I havent seen many prospects listed in these trade scenarios.

I'd be willing to give up Ivey, Solomon, Josh James, Taylor Jones, Toro and Robel Garcia. But I dont think any of those guys besides maybe Solomon and Ivey would get anybody huge in the market

I would think it would be a combo of ML talent and prospects.

and you won't get much for them

Yep, not at all. Maybe a middle tier reliever or OF guy but that's not much of a high reward.

Our bullpen will get better in the playoffs when we add 2 starters to it (Odo, Urquidy), but can we overcome the BP to make the playoffs?

I don't know the going rate, but I don't think a rental reliever isn't going to cost all that much in prospects. Especially if it's someone like Daniel Bard. It'll also heavily depend on who the trade partner thinks of particular prospects.

Need to also figure out soon who's really equipped to pitch out of the Pen and who's not. It's not a given that Odo, Urquidy, Garcia can warm up for 5 mins and be ready to be effective in a pinch.

This might be a bit of a generalization, but why does every batter in the NL suck?

Garcia spent time out of the pen last year, right? I would think he would be the quickest to transition.

one thing that is going to help Altuve get elected / make the all-star team...

the simple fact that his last name starts with the letter "A" --- you see his name first on the ballot

They list each player's AVG, HR, RBI, OPS.

I think that is a decent little snapshot. What 4 stats would you use to judge a player?

For me:
wRC+ (or OPS+ very similar stat)
fWAR (or bWAR again basically the same)
wOBA
OAA.

For an all star game ballot for position players I look at games played, OPS, HR, and RBI mainly.

I tend to look at ATAA (Are They an Astro). For me, it's an easy stat to help me make a decision.

Here's the outcome of the trade rumor we got all worked up over Saturday.

Mike trout and Byron Buxton being 1st on the ballots shows how fans can't be trusted with the votes. Both haven't played in over a month

Not sure who else we have in the system but eventually at some point in the future this organization is going to have to address the catching situation.

Maybe we just continue to pluck Madly type vets off the trade block but one thing I do know is that the answer is NOT Garrett Stubbs.

We did use our last first round pick on a catcher. He's doing well in High A.

We have Maldy and Castro for this year and next.

They should put games played on there so you can compare who's played a month versus three.

so there will be 32 players on the American League all-star team.

20 position players and 12 pitchers.

it looks like the Astros won't have anyone elected.

which leaves 11 position-player slots
W

Altuve is currently running 2nd in the voting...so he should make it.

Yuli and Bregman are 3rd at their positions. Yordan is 3rd at DH.

Correa is outside the top 3 at SS --- he may be the big snub this year. He should be on the team

Fun off day topic

Let's say the Astros never moved the the AL. What would the results of our 2015-2020 seasons have looked like? Keeping in mind we would not have had a DH in those years.

We would have likely missed the playoffs in 2015. 2016 also.
2017-2018 would have been tougher because the NL Central was really good that year with Milwaukee and Chicago.
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?

would have been a bunch of playoff series vs. the Dodgers.

the 'stros would have dominated the NL Central. Feasted on the Reds & Pirates & Brewers.

the offensive numbers might have been even better playing 30 games at Wrigley, Miller Park, and the Reds' bandbox (instead of the larger AL West venues)
Farmer1906

While 2015 might have been tougher, I think 2016 wins the WC. We could have had a shot of knocking off the Cubs in the NLCS. They might have never ended their curse.
tjack16
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
So this is what I think would have happened if we never moved to AL (which I'm very glad we moved to the AL)

2015: maybe WC
2016: Wild Card based on weaker division
2017: win World Series vs NYY or BOS
2018: lose World Series against BOS
2019: lose NLCS to WSH
2020: likely lose in NLCS to LAD

Feel free to quote and edit based on what you think.

And here I was all excited to watch some baseball tonight... bummer.
